3.03 is for Symbian. Maemo has 1.01, which is rather a bad joke. Nokia seems not really commited to Maemo customers an only will provide something better for next generation (M6).

Currently Nokia seems to have stopped further support for M5.
Personally I believe they might even let drop Maemo completely.

Alternatives are free Navit (needs developers....) or, if you havent yet a Maemo device, you might think about Android Milestone, where there is google Maps + Navigation and a number of free OSM based off-line navigation apps.

You can't compare the version numbers of Maemo Ovi Maps to Symbian Ovi Maps. For example, Maemo Ovi Maps 1.0 has 3D buildings, which Symbian Ovi (Nokia) Maps didn't have in version 1.0.

So by saying Maemo has "only" version 1.0 compared to Symbian is meaningless. It's a completely different product which happens to have the same name.

Ovi Maps on Maemo platforms has
- lacks turn-by-turn navigation
- has no no re-routing
- no seriously supported way to download maps
- i could continue.

Once the maemo ovi maps gets the feature for voice turn by turn, it will probably be free. give it time and we will eventually get up to date.

its funny Wiener how you think Nokia is going to completely drop Maemo. obviously symbian is the majority over maemo, so thats how they are going to prioritize.

Maemo Ovi ver 1.01 already has turn by turn. Just press the directions button after you put a route in. Its missing the voice sythasyser to speak it to you.

No problem with priorizazion on Symbian.

Why does it need a voice synthesizer? Isn't that more work than playing an audio file for turning left when you come to the point it should say "turn left in 50 metres" ? It's also easy to put in different languages by replacing the English files with German etc with the same filenames for "turn left", "turn right" etc.

Maybe submit a bug for voice synthesizer and route recalculation when not on route? see what the maemo developers have to say?

All the posts here are highly speculative, and many of them provide conclusions without rationale. I think one has to wait at least what the next two weeks bring before jumping to all these naive "I sell my N900" and "I hate Nokia" conclusions. Also, the blog posts that are cited here over and over again contain no reliable information. I'm sure more information on Nokia's strategy will leak over the next couple of weeks.

Here is my own speculation: Phones that are compatible to the new navigation application gained significantly in value, but their price remains the same. On the other hand, N900 has "lost" in value (relatively), because it doesn't have this feature (yet). I doubt that many people will still consider buying an N900 unless there is a definite statement from Nokia that they will bring the advanced navigation features to that device. Therefore, I believe Nokia has two options:

(1) Announce similar navigation features for the N900 soon.

(2) Not care about future sales of the N900.

Everything one reads in the press about the surprising success of the N900, the dual platform strategy (Symbian for phones, Maemo for PDAs), and the fact that Symbian is not considered competitive with other smartphone OSes indicates that (2) is not an option.

So, here is my prophecy: Within the next two week there will be an official statement that similar navigation features will be made available for the N900 "soon". Not sure what "soon" will mean, but I'd hope within the next 3 months or so.
