One may argue what that "reasonable life of the product" is.
Some companies discontinue their phones after one year.

Nokia still sells the N900, e.g.:

They delivered 1.3 .

All after more than one year...

I can't really argue with that.

All I just wish is meego and maemo would be like symbian^3 and symbian^4...
Symbian^4 got discontinued, Symbian^3 would get software updates. Hey who knows? Who would ever thought Symbian^4 ain't coming? UI was also released to public before it got discontinued... Just keep all the negative comments on meego and it should be discontinued along the way And nokia would revive maemo support.

Note that Ovi Maps prior to 3.03 already had voice navigation and just required payment to Nokia to have it activated (ie all the code/etc is already there). So basically voice navigation is not something new to Ovi Maps at the time of that particular launch event, it is something already well established. What was new was that they removed the code that checked whether you have paid for voice navigation, called it 3.03 and made it available for only a few select phone models - these tend to be the newer phones at that time. When asked why it wasn't available on "older" phones, Nokia's lame excuse was that there were technical problems preventing them from releasing 3.03 for older phones (even though these "older" phones were running the paid for voice navigation just fine).

So at an event trumpeting Ovi Maps with Free Voice Navigation and a Nokia executive says later there will be a Maemo version, it's not surprising that people are a bit disappointed when the Maemo version turns out to be a pre-alpha of some ancient version of smart2go!
I wouldn't say it could be argued irrefutably, but I do understand that some people misinterpreted it.

I guess people's disappointment stems in part from making a false assumption about the meaning of a statement without checking for confirmation of their assumed "facts". The other part of the reason for disappointment is a high-end device like the N900 not getting an Ovi Maps app that isn't nearly as good as the version on other cheaper Nokias, but the time for complaining about that has long passed.

No, we're talking about some combination of Nokia and your colorful description.

Agreed. Amen.

Some may fall into that trap, I would suggest that the reasonable life of the product is until the next version releases and that the 1.3 update should have been on the scale of 1.2.

Yes, and if they're actively selling it then they should still be actively supporting the product. All indications, including from those that work for Nokia is that support has basically been ramped down to the lowest level and my contention is that they should not be allowed to behave as such until a product is no longer sold or at least until the successor is released. I go into more detail in previous posts in this thread.

Relax. I don't know who did and I'm not worrying about it. Neither should you. The new title supports discussion. Let's try that.

My two cents on this issue...

I will never buy another Nokia device. I explain myself. Nokia built a fantastic gadget, the best I've seen, much better than any around. In fact, it's a tiny computer with a graphics card opengl capable. Then Nokia ports a crappy map software like Ovi Maps x.xx.xxx (no matter what version, they are all useless) which barely moves on the device and uses no hardware capabilities of the n900. And then, someone brings a software like cloudgps that it shows you what Nokia should have done since the beginning, I mean, use the graphic hardware acceleration that was build in your device by your Nokia engineers.

There isn't any word in this world to explain how I felt when I saw this piece of software doing what should have come built in my n900. Nokia made a fantastic device and then let it die with a bunch of "malware", instead of developing its capacities. I felt frustrated, angry, looking for answers. And then, Nokia says there will be no further support for Maemo. So I'll close the door to Nokia devices from now on. I love my n900, but Nokia finally made I hate them.
