I will never buy another Nokia device. I explain myself. Nokia built a fantastic gadget, the best I've seen, much better than any around. In fact, it's a tiny computer with a graphics card opengl capable. Then Nokia ports a crappy map software like Ovi Maps x.xx.xxx (no matter what version, they are all useless) which barely moves on the device and uses no hardware capabilities of the n900. And then, someone brings a software like cloudgps that it shows you what Nokia should have done since the beginning, I mean, use the graphic hardware acceleration that was build in your device by your Nokia engineers.

There isn't any word in this world to explain how I felt when I saw this piece of software doing what should have come built in my n900. Nokia made a fantastic device and then let it die with a bunch of "malware", instead of developing its capacities. I felt frustrated, angry, looking for answers. And then, Nokia says there will be no further support for Maemo. So I'll close the door to Nokia devices from now on. I love my n900, but Nokia finally made I hate them.
A much as I disagree with Nokia's limitations and software policy, Maps isn't exactly manure, a few features lack but let's not compare it to a smooth scroll app. Cloud doesn't search for me, all queries freeze the app. No routing AFAICT, no POI saving or searching, it's basically a map viewer. And frankly it's not faster than Maps, just smoother on my device (OC).

I don't appreciate Maps because it lacks internal cache on demand and saving of POI or bookmarks but other than that it's fine. Oh and it taks ages to start.

It's not about which app is the better. Of course, CloudGPS is a work in progress, which fails to cover most of items we need from a navigation software. My ran it's about an official app made by the gadget's manufacturer which fails to use it's own capabilities. Come on. It's like Ferrari building a Formula 1 car, and then Ferrari puts wood wheels in the car. And then, a tiny small company comes to show how it should have been done, optimizing the app using the opengl capabilities that were built in. If I were Nokia I would feel embarrassed, but I'm a Nokia customer and I feel angry

Is there a Wikileaks news item in the making here?

Meanwhile, everyone else has steadily been progressing and improving their map offerings on other platforms. Some doing far more than just the simple improvements to meet expectations customers have for a mapping and navigation application.

I dont give a **** if nokia not supporting n900 in case of "latest flash" or ovimaps etc.. This is probadly technical problems and to much debugging testing to get it working.

But there is one important thing that is a MUST support atleast one more year and should not bve a problem for nokia to fix with very small upgrade package as long as the core QT is not breaking ABI/API (4.7.0 and 4.7.1 as an example) :

Developers want to use QT/QtQuick Mobility without stupid hacks. to make it work on N900. So I really hope nokia takes this serous and get this fixed:

http://thpmaemo.blogspot.com/2010/12...o-5-needs.html

And another thing about QT is there anyone who has got time to test QTMobility 1.1 (beta) and the camera API?

I have not tested yet but is even the QTMobility Camera API supported on N900?

But, I thought Maemo was built on open-source. Can't you just fix it? Or, at least, submit a bug report and have someone push out a fix soon?

Okay, so let's clarify this, once and for all. Nokia never said that nor is it the state of things. Let's get past misinterpreted statements and marketing talk. Sure, the N900 is over a year old now and focus has shifted to newer, fancier, MeeGoer things, and sadly, the N900 will not see a direct upgrade to the next major OS version. However. That does not change the fact that the Qt SDK is getting more polished (read: finally usable) Maemo support in the next version with QtQuick et al, that the N900 is still an Ovi store supported device (quality of the offering notwithstanding) and that there is ongoing work done by community (and, regardless of what you believe, even inside Nokia) that can increase the life expectancy of the N900 and help present and future developers.

Somewhere, there's still someone using a Nokia 770/N8x0 and it's still getting software.. even if the OS is riddled in unfixable bugs, unavoidable annoyances and never to see them fixed by the community. Welcome to the fold, guys. We've been waiting--we just weren't sure it would be as soon as we had expected.

Note that with the 770/N8x0 you were sentenced to that OS (or various hackers editions of equally finicky newer iterations of it). The N900 is the first one not sentenced to the corresponding Maemo version. Will that result in a usable community remix of MeeGo, Android or whatever ? No idea, there are of course obstacles like closed drivers/components/whatnot, but if you are annoyed by Maemo5, that option is closer than it ever was (cue for ranting about Mer, Nokia, and assorted glass-half-empty statements).

I changed it after a number of people complained about the original title.

After the original post had been shown to not fully reflect the actual situation, this thread quickly expanded to (re-)cover the broader topic of Nokia's support (or lack thereof) for the N900, Maemo 5, and Maemo in general. My goal with the new title was to convey, in a neutral manner, that larger debate the thread has grown to encompass.

Actually, supposedly the N8x0's were SUPPOSED to get Fremantle community backports, as I recall Nokia telling us. As well, we were told MeeGo would be able to run on them. Glass-half-empty, glass-half-full, whatever... THE GLASS IS TOO TALL.
