samsung used to be pretty bad about updating their firmware
but they are starting to improve with getting updates to their newer "smart" phones

I don't see the benefit of driving Eldar off like this. He's got his online news thing going on, and if anyone should care about it and take any actions if the content was not 'satisfactory' (due to legal reasons) it should be Nokia.
It's a gadget news site and its worth to me is that it brings cutting edge news and leaks wether it's a sanctioned news item from the manufacturer or not. If you try to leverage and expect anything more from it then i think you're setting yourself up for the disappointment.
Edit: i take his review as is. I don't think he has any personal motives against nokia as his writigs don't reflect such thing, and he's experienced and knowledgeable enough to make an objective review. Will it change my decision to buy the n900? No, i've preordered for 2 units and they're still waiting for the stock. My personal experience with *nix or bsd powered device have been very good (in terms of performance efficiency and reliability), so's my experience with nokia made hardwares.

I fimd hilarious how Eldar says that the problem with the N900 is that Nokia showed it to the world, when Nokia has been downplaying it the whole time, and while his first preview was the one that started the online buzz. Heh.
Anyway, into more productive points, so far, everything I see shows that Nokia, having developed the device, are aware of its strong and weak points, and have managed it accordingly. [irony ]Shocking, I understand, but Nokia might know what they are doing![/irony ]
Maemo is more than the N900? Check: "step 4 of 5", Qt for Harmattan, etc
Could and will Maemo 5 be better? Check: Brainstorm, OTA capabilities, and statements about work being done to add more features. I don't understand why people act like the software will never be upgraded.
Is Maemo 5 a transitional step? Check: it is meant to, among other things, pave the way for the "step 5". A lot of things are not ready for mass consumers, including ourselves. But we are willing (or should be willing) to move forward and improve as quickly as possible.
One last thing. People at times do not seem to be aware of the constraints inherent to development (time being one of those). If the N900 is not a perfect device, it is not because Nokia decided to be evil and piss you off. It was because time was short (it always is) and not everything could be done. Deadlines have to be met, and the N900 is as perfect as was possible in such circunstances.
And its sucessors will be better.

For instance, I'm not involved in the marketing. But take the N800 and N810, they weren't heavily marketed, in relation to how Nokia usually markets their devices. I (as a purely personal opinion) would have seen heavy marketing for them as counter-productive. They weren't ready for mass markets, on many levels, the UX being one of them.
If some John Doe would have been targeted and found by a N800 ad, and he would have gone through the trouble of trying to see the device and perhaps even buy one, and get disappointed over what he bought, it wouldn't have been very good for either Maemo or Nokia in the long run.

PS: as a rule of thumb, in the industry "mass market" is at least 10x bigger than what the average talk.maemo.org reader has in mind when typing that term.That's a lesson I learned myself after joining Nokia.

A device which has Xterm out of the box is NOT supposed to be for the "mass market". Imagine the service nightmare for nokia if those people who spend 100 dollars on apps that display the content of a beer glass on their cellphone or can make burping and pooping sounds - if those people would go wild on xterm because "the friend of a friend told them a special code that can double the jiggahurtz of da phone" - *shiver*... Nokia would remove your console faster than you could spell "jailbreak".
dumb phones for the masses, and elite devices for me!

Always On instant messaging.
Push Email (either via idle imap, or activesync / exchange type).
The thing would make me return this phone is if the battery life doesn't surpass 4-5 hours. But so far, people were stating 12-13 hours with wifi and 3g on. I don't use wifi too much (i'll use it to update the files on the device, plug it into a charger and drag over about 3 gigs of music or videos). And 3g I can def. live without since all I'll use the phone for is videos, music, chatting and emailing. I know there are better devices for messaging, but to be honest, I've been a blackberry user for 4 years, and I've had a ton of devices since then, too. The BB OS hasn't changed AT ALL in the past 4 years. Since 4.1 to 5.0 there isn't too much that's new and it's kind of boring. I feel archaic using it.
The Maemo 5 OS looks to offer some bling bling to the OS .

Let me just say this: However "buggy" and "incomplete" the upcoming N900 is going to be, it is unlikely to be more buggy or incomplete than 60% of S60 smartphones Nokia releases. Unlike S60 phones though, we can at least expect N900 firmware to be regularly and non-destructively updated. Right, Quim? =)
PS: Does Samsung update firmware in its phones? How often? Does Samsung produce any smartphones at all, or is it just the feature phones for now?
