I know the various mencoder based solutions for Linux (tablet-encode...) and they are quite good except that they are lacking a decent GUI (yeah I know there are some minimalistic GUIs available).
Assistance - and suggestions - on tablet-encode's GUI welcome. Getting it to the functional richness of ITVC's GUI is unlikely (I have no need of it), but patches welcome :-)
No need to distribute mencoder or any codes along with the GUI. I guess every Linux user is able to install mencoder from the repositories of his preferred distribution.
I can still see Nokia's lawyers having fits over that if there's any perceived question over mencoder's legality or their legal responsibilities. There's also a question of how much effort they should expend on that.
Of course, poking around inside ITVC reveals it to be a XUL application, combine that with the developer docs and the GUI might very well be hackable to work on Linux very easily. Then all that needs doing is to make tablet-encode have a TCP/IP interface as described in the dev docs.
I might very well give it a go myself...
