N9 runs Meego Harmattan due to that whole Intel thing that never went anywhere.
It should have been called a new version of Maemo though the graphical interface was quite different.
If you own an N9 go to the about device section.

Yes it is basically Maemo but it is not called Maemo as I myself stated. It is called Meego because of the whole Intel thing that never went anywhere. The gui is different in many ways from the old tablets and N900 we had.
I do agree the Intel "real" Meego was rpm based and didn't share much with N9 Meego which is deb and basically Maemo. The original plan was that the phones would go to the rpm based Meego and the devices would be more consistent but that never happened. I do wonder if that is part of the reason why Sailfish is rpm based, not sure but it would make sense.
Anyway point still stands get him an N900 if one wants to say because this site is called Maemo it should be a Maemo device.
Sad thing is this is at least the 2nd time his phone got stolen. I wonder why they target him, not like the Jolla is the highest end phone. You'd think they would grab iphones.
