We might be able to add proper "expand/collapse" graphics to the left of the list and use them to expand/collapse nodes, but I have not worked too much with trees in GtkTreeView (just lists), so it might take a while. I propose that for the first release, we leave everything expanded and then work on improving the UI/interaction from there.
