I got this to work using PPP Widget. It requires a rooted nexus 7 and a usb otg cable. Unlike BlueVPN, it's not wireless, but it gives full internet access on the tablet and it does so at very good speeds.
Steps:
Download PPP Widget from the play store and add the widget to a homescreen (grant superuser access when prompted).
Select "Configure" on the widget.
- Fill in Access Point Name (I just entered a blank space here).
- Disable automatic device detection.
Connect N9 with usb otg cable.
- Choose "Sync and connect" option on N9.
Select the PPP icon and choose your N9 from the list.
Hit Connect.
The widget manages the wifi connection so I didn't have to turn off wifi on the nexus to get this to work. I have yet to find an internet enabled app that can't connect to the net.
Bonus: not only does the n9 charge while connected to the nexus 7, the wifi hotspot app can be used simultaneously for other devices.
Anyone know what I might have done wrong? I've got a rooted Nexus 10 + PPP Widget + USB OTG + Nokia N9

Has anybody here tried an openmode kernel? Does it have the nat modules necessary for connection sharing?
I am able to compile my own kernels now, but do not know how to flash them.

I got it working with my Nexus 10 now. For those interested it seems Nexus 10 doesn't have the drivers needed included.

Can anyone help please, I've tried Blue VPN and commented out the disabled PAN Line on my n9a above, blue vpn links to my n9, isee the 3.5G blue icon on my n9, then 3 seconds later the 3.5G Icon vanishes and blue vpn says no connection.
So i tried 2nd option, bought an otg cable, rooted My nexus, ppp Widget installed, followed instructions above, same thing, 3.5G icon (or 3G depending where i am) appears on my n9, afew seconds later it vanishes and ppp widget says disconnected.
IHave a stock n9, pr1.3, no Inception, dev Mode off, istarted with background internet connections off (1.3 update bug forever connecting and draining my battery), then tried background internet connections on, same problem.
My n9 works on internet fine when i manually connect, issue is blue vpn & ppp widget can't keep link open?
Any ideas?

I'm in the very same boat.
A gently tweaked Nokia N9 with a Nexus 7 that's been rooted, but even then it will not see/join any ad-hoc wi-fi networks, only infrastructure whereas my iPad sees my N9 and joins without incident.
This is a noted limitation on Android Jelly Bean and the tweaks to the wi-fi settings/radio on the Nexus 7 do not work like they did on the Nexus S. I've been watching the XDA forums a bit, but there's still no way to fully get wi-fi to work between the two. And personally, I do not find the Bluetooth PAN method ideal - it's a bottleneck that I'd rather avoid.

BlueVPN uses Bluetooth DUN. In my Jelly Bean device Blutooth PAN is working without 3rd party apps. However, I don't know whether N9 supports BT PAN, I used only BlueVPN to tether to it and it worked fine.

Do you use any specific settings on either the nexus or n9 To get Bluetooth tethering working?
I've tried various combinations if access point names and user names / passwords With the ppp Widget and still get my n9 Connecting to 3g for a couple of second before it disconnects.... Almost as if tethering us disallowed - Which is odd a the wifi Hotspot app works fine (but no goodas adhoc For Android!)
Sorry about the typing....swype Does mysterious things!! :-)

I have no specific setting on android or n9 to get BlueVPN working. Not even commenting out the DisablePlugins in N9, no settings on BlueVPN. I don't have Nexus. I can get it working from ICS, but not from JB. In JB there is some unobscure error, maybe my ROM is not compatible with BlueVPN.
From JB I'm using Android built in BT PAN connection (to n900...not N9). Others have tweaked BT PAN working on N9 also.

bluevpn will be nicer, cable-free solution, so if i'm on the school run for example, N9 in my pocket, bluetooth on, nexus in my hands checking whatever yay. This works better though!
