20190208_102442_1, on Flickr

Got some good flying crystals in sunlight action while scraping ice/sleet/snow mixture frozen solidly to windshield. (A similar coating is on everything horizontal and outdoors here.)

At least it's warmer than 255K!

(Sailfish X on Xperia X, stock camera, cropped on camera.)

Gotta love those fractals.

Here is my entry. I missed the "interesting" weather by a week (we had about 10 cm of snow at some point, with predictable consequences - schools and offices closed, rubbish not collected, the usual) and now we are back to a normal, wet and muddy British winter.

This patch is an example of the better side of it. It's a terrible quality picture, thanks to the phone it's been taken with (Jolla) and the patch being in the "twilight zone".

To be honest, I do not understand snowdrops. The point of a flower is to attract pollinators, right? Plants that are pollinated by the wind do not bother making pretty flowers. That would be a waste of resources.

So who pollinates the snowdrops at this time of year?

Some bugs can be pretty opportunistic during even a brief spell of mild weather. E.g., it's both interesting and horrifying here to see mosquitoes flying around when there's still snow on the ground. If the people selling weekly pesticide applications are to be believed, a mosquito can breed in a puddle of water smaller than a butterfly's teardrop, so a little melted snow should be plenty for the ambitious insect couple looking to get a head start on the rest of the population!

Also I learned just last week reading a "Children's questions for Dr. Bug" article that there are such things as snow fleas which aren't fleas, and snow files, both of which have antifreeze in their blood!

And Fellfrosch, I like the tilt-shifty look of your secret chalets!

Excellent pic Fell.

As far as pollinators go for snowdrops...
Yup there are lots of opportunistic bugs..
as well snowdrops occur in patches ...
and pollination can occur from mice, rabbits and other animals or birds brushing against and getting pollen on themselves as they hunt and forage on the ground.
God help us all with the severity of the extremes of climate change if the birds go...

Another winterpic, kind of relevant. "One sunny winter day in a faraway land"

Taken with N900, slight levels & unsharp mask in Gimp.
