3 days into my iphone, I really am loving the device. It struck a nice balance between function, features and hackability I think.

Not too many ppl talk about how hackable the iphone is. To illustrate that, one way to 'expand' upon the application space is to move it to a different partition and make a symbolic link to point to the new space. Yes, many ppl forget that the iphone has a BSD core underneath.

As for the apps, there's plenty of good ones now (the included apps are good enough, the 3rd party ones available are pretty cool) but come June-July, I'm guessing there will be an explosion of apps for the iphone from big 3rd party names which will make a considerable dent in the market (and the iphone's capability... & desirability . Yes, most of them will probably be commercial (I assume with the high level of polish and quality, but curse them if they aren't) which I don't mind paying for good stuffs anyway.

But this may be a sticking point for those on the budget..

I don't count features that violate the TOS. This goes doubly true for the iPhone since an update can easily force the user to choose phone or hacks. As a second pocket device my n810 will never force me to choose between phone service and applications of my choice.

Apple is going to be cutting down a lot of apps before they hit the store. You will be forced to pay for what would be freeware on any other platform because of the lock-in and cost structure of iPhone development.

But is there a way without hacking to have songs from two different computers at the same time??
Yes. When your iPod is connected, go to the iPod menu, select music, and deselect the 'Sync my music to this computer' (I don't have the iPod to hand so I don 't know the exact wording). Then when you plug it in, you just pick up the tracks you want to put on the iPod, and drag them to it.
I tend to just sort the songs by added date, and pick the top songs in the list that I have added since the last time

It is how I use it - I have 3 computers I use at various times, and they all have differnt subsets of my music on them. I don't want it tied to any one machine.

To me, the continued back-and-forth here just serves to demonstrate that, overall, the tablets and iProducts really are (currently) addressing very distinct markets/users.

They are clearly different products. i have both and like both. I don't quite understand why there is so much animosity to the apple devices here.

"Currently"

Does that mean will the Nxxx in the future support gsm also?

For me, the fact that the differences are discussed to this extent demonstrates that the product lines compete in almost exactly the same space.

I compared the iTouch and the N810 very carefully before ending up with the Nokia IT, and comparison questions pop up on the forums here quite regularly.

The only scenario I can see where I would completely discount any comparison is where someone is specifically looking for a single device with cellular phone capabilities.

Different markets, yes, but I think it also shows there is some overlap of markets. There are a number of posts (a definite minority, to be sure) equivocating to one degree or another...

It continues to amaze me that anyone could come to that conclusion. I would think the dialog that's been going on here for some time made the con argument self-evident.

Tablets focus: highly-portable and configurable computers

iProducts focus: sexy media players/communicators

Oh, absolutely. But I repeat myself: the few differences become the large determining factors in choosing one over the other. That is, the differences create a desire disproportionate to their apparent size and/or impact.

EDIT: what would be interesting to me is to see a group comprised of iPhone and tablet owners who liked both devices equally for different purposes and used the iPhone tethered to the tablet for-- oh wait, never mind.

I just wish there would be an active sync client to an email/calendar app. One that does support remote wipe. I have 2 friends with the Iphone... Im an It guy and love that they are getting that functionality. However I dont want to give up my remote desktop to work on my servers. I am torn, as I want an all in one device.
