It will not take you from point A to point B, but will show you where you are with a Bluetooth GPS

This is the first thing i really hate about the tablet. when the whole world is giving routing free. .., why not give it to us for free. voice guided instructions can be premuium

I found this at http://www.wayfinder.com/internettablet

It says:
"As a Nokia N810 Internet tablet user you can try Wayfinder Navigator for 7 days free of charge."

Does this means that the Maps software will expire in 1 week? I flashed my N800 2 days ago.

Please advice.

Thanks,

Ramkre

No. It means that the voice step-by-step navigation will expire in 7 days. Maps software that is preinstalled is free and will stay installed on your IT.

I would save the 7 day trial for some trip when you can actually test it.

The seven days start when you request a temporary license from Wayfinder. From the Map Application pull down menu select 'About Map' and you should see an option for a trial license. I've already entered my old Navkit license so this option has been removed on my tablet and I can't tell you exactly how it's phrased but it was pretty obvious.

I like MaemoMapper for the Google Hybrid maps, routing before-hand between two known POIs, and for the sheer effort that Gnuite has put into it... but I wouldn't compare it to Wayfinder Navigator nor put it on par. It's not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Yesterday I drove over 70mi to a place I hadn't been before. I knew about it an hour earlier, and I didn't have access to WiFi. I could either plot it on MaemoMapper across a slow AT&T GPRS/EDGE connection or use WayFinder. Along the way, I was looking for a good Thai restaurant to stop and eat at.

As a GPS application, WayFinder works perfectly. It recalculates quickly when I miss an exit or need to find another route around a traffic jam. It's useful for finding routes or POIs I'd have missed otherwise. The "Christopher (UK)" voice is better than flite in MaemoMapper or my Garmin, but that's subjective.

As someone who travels, and needs instant access to routing with quick recalculating, it's not a fair comparison. WayFinder is worth the 89 EU ($127 USD) for anyone who wants to use their N810 as they would a Garmin or Tomtom.

Thanks for the replies.

If it won't expire then it's good to download the maps to the SD card.

The bottom line here is that without activation you get a working GPS software without Voice navigation nor point A to point B guidance, right? It will show you where you are and it will move as you move.

yes, it will still show you the guidance from point A to point B, but without VOICE guidance.

someone correct me if I am wrong.

Hello,
I was able to download the maps without problems (took a while, though - around one hour for West USA).

However, now my Applications Manager is showing an update for the Maps app but if I click on "Update" it gives me back the following message:
"Unable to Install. Software contains updates to packages installed from a fifferent source and is likely to harm the system. Contact software author.".

Anyone else getting this message also?

The Maps app I have running is the one that came with OS 2008.

If I click on "Version" within Maps I get:
App v.2.2.6.377
Map v.2.2.1.347
TA2006.10

Application Manager lists the "update" as v.2.2.6.377-1
