It would not surprise me if the N800 were indeed discontinued, because the price drop suggests inventory liquidation. However, it may simply be that the supply is temporarily depleted because Nokia is devoting its production and logistics capacity for the N810 and will replenish N800 inventories later.

The funniest thing happend in Media Markt here in CH. I asked for the N800 and the response was: "It's not out yet, comes Q1/2008". So many dumb people here working in the shops. Never found anyone who's up-to-date!

Gotta agree with TA-t3's rubbish sentiment. Just because you don't see a need for two SD slots, doesn't mean a lot of other people wont.

Personally, I think everybody should calm down until we hear word from some sort of reputable source. There's a million and one explanations for why this particular dealer might be making these statements, and "it's true" isn't necessarily very high up in that list.

If this isn't true, then I think Nokia needs to do two things:

1) someone at Nokia needs to confirm to us that they haven't changed course, and they haven't discontinued the N800

2) Nokia's legal department needs to have a talk with the sites spreading this disinformation, which could in turn harm Nokia's reputation with its customers. Nokia's legal department will hopefully know exactly how to handle this (words like "cease" and "desist" come to mind).

If it IS true, then I think Nokia owes us an explanation.

FWIW, I've always considered the N800 (and other devices with two slots) simply as a device with an SD slot and upgradable internal storage (as opposed to one with an SD slot and a harddisk, e.g. Palm Lifedrive. Or fixed flash, as the N810). That's what I like: Upgradable/replacable internal storage. And it frees up the "real" SD slot to always be available for whatever I want to momentarily use it for.

Anyway, I agree with the Gen.: Let's wait until we know better.

and:
The weird thing is Play.com are still offering the N800 for £149 ($307) - and it's on PRE-ORDER!! Apparently the N800 comes out in a week's time!!
Hmm.... Maybe these retailers know more than we do (gasp!) and there is going to be a refresh of the N800 soon.

Tex?

Simple logic: if N9xx has different hardware, wouldn't it be hard for Nokia to continue OS development for 2 different platforms? Wouldn't Nokia discontinue N8xx at some point?

I got the following email from www.nulime.com today regarding a request to be notified when the Nokia N810 was available for sale.

"On November 10, 2007 you requested to be notified when "N810 Portable Internet Tablet" came back in stock.

As of December 3, 2007 at 6:00 AM it has been discontinued and we do not expect to receive anymore in stock."

Wow, with both the N800 and N810 being cancelled, maybe the N900 will be available for Christmas. ;^)

What is really happening with the N800, I do not know, but I am sure you can ignore nulime's view on the status of the N810.

Erm, The N810 replaces the N800 just fine. There is like 15 people that need 2 SD slots. It looks better, has a superior screen, GPS and keyboard in a smaller form factor.
I have a N800 (acquired two weeks ago) and filled up my two SD slots immediately; its not difficult at all to fill up two 8GB cards. In my case its a combo of data which I need to cart around (internet not always available) and access; and I rather like having my entire music collection and other audio with me while on the road.

While I'm a Unix user from way back, my use of the N800 is anything but geeky.

As for GPS and Keyboard, I specifically did *not* want either. I've no use for GPS (nor for the additional cost). If they come out with a N805 that has a keyboard but no GPS, that might have been something worth considering.

What Nokia needs to do in order to get ahead of the market and stay there is get these units down to the lowest possible price point and get millions of them out there. Quickly.

lol...you all fell for the same statements Nokia made to us 770 owners when the N800 first came out about how the 770 was going to continue to be a product along with the N800...next thing you know all of us 770 owners are left high & dry. Pretty much why I refuse to buy another Nokia product even though I really enjoy and still use my 770 on a regular basis.
