indeed, for the most part the ones that feel the need to come here and say that the best solution for N8*0 problems is to get a iphone.

i have yet to go to a iphone forum and make a thread telling people to dump it in favor of a N800 or N810...

but i wish i could just ignore the threads showing up here. i guess im only human after all

You have some good points but the argument doesn't stand.

The iPod touch has a decent web browser which renders pages quickly. It lacks Flash, plugin support, and more which greatly limit the web browsing experience. It has a far superior media player and music management suite, but lacks the ability to play media right after it is downloaded unless it is purchased from iTunes. The iPod touch lacks Bluetooth, GPS capability, keyboard input, an applications library, and more.

The iPod touch and iPhone are great devices for a LOT of people - but they are not SUPERIOR to the N800/N810 overall. They cater to different desires.
I've read your blog posts and really like how you've assesed issues with the NITs in comparison to other options. (I was almost NOT going to buy an N800 on account of some of your posts )

With that said - when it comes to being an internet device - the element of USER INTERFACE is something everyone wants polished - it's just something that linux and tech guys can live without.

But as far as I know, no tech guys complain about the polish of a Mac product, as long as they can tinker somewhere (hence the super eye candy versions of Ubuntu etc.)

The iPhone and NITs are different - fair enough - but one aspect where the iSeries really trounces the NITs is in being an intuitive tool (not just for dummies, but really well thought out interfacing) that makes total logical sense in terms of navigation, integration and use - even considering the lack of functions. - There's something nice about a hammer, this is not so nice...

As you've said, the TabletOS is woefully misdirected, or rather, has no unified vision in terms of what it wants to be.

Someday, hopefully, someone at Nokia will pick someone to be in charge that says "things should look like this, let's keep that vision" - instead, I get the whole world of linux developers (the good and bad) on my tablet with every update and new program...

On the contrary, while that's not a very good hammer, I'm sure it beats a rock for light work, and the claw can probably come in handy; if it were $33 here, instead of on some japanese site, I'd buy it right now.

i think that one possible fear is that the polished interface comes at the expence of flexibility...

Which is exactly what most of the suggested "replacement" interfaces do away with.

^ I'm not a gadget freak but I was liking the idea of the uber hammer too.

One reason we don't get upset at a less than ideal intuitive design is that if we only have to bang our head once or twice before getting it right we're happy. If it *works* ideally after a few minutes of imperfect UI then it might be superior in the long term. If I bang my head every time then it just sucks. The N doesn't suck. If I feel like a lump after the coolness wears off then it sucks. The N sucks less.

edit-> Is it true that if microsoft sucked just a little more they could be classified as a black hole? ok, the iDeology doesn't suck as bad as MS however.... it is about which sucks less for you particular needs. amen.

Every NIT owner who jumps ship to the iPod platform increases the average IQ of both user communities.

This should probably be encouraged, as it is a win-win situation ;-)

This is the wittiest thing I've read all week. I may have to steal this quote.
