xp here;set up the ffmpeg path manually, update button appears. Click it? Crash. used rc1 to install ruby. Also... crash, close window or ctrl c makes no difference; vlc process is always left hanging.

Deinstalled;reinstalled. Results largely identical, but I managed to get the XP server to recognize a single folder containing two .avi files. Firing up the client on the N800 sees the files; playback of either simply causes the client to crash instantly. I'm not feeling the love...

Can you try "gem update" and installing newer mswin32 versions? Wonder why your gems differ.

well, I installed the RC1 you indicated... unless you meant a much earlier build...? Will attempt gem update and report back.
Update: updated win32 gems manually; behavior identical... Update Collection crashes the server. Also: failed attempts to view the avis in the collection cause the client to crash, run ruby.exe to 100% cpu on the xp side or leaves hanging 100% cpu mencoder process there.
