Based on what, a few screenshots and some marketing videos? Hardly the sort of things that will illustrate the sort of damage I'm talking about.

Exactly, which is why you'll have to trust the people who have been around for a while, and are deeply involved in the platform and the people around it.

And Maemo Select will point you to Ovi Store for commercial-grade content. We just need to see and wait if and when that Ovi Store on the N900 is up and running.
Hello Peter,

Can I give you a small suggestion? I know you guys are busy as hell, but lately I am noticing a trend: people in the forums is jumping to conclusions too quickly, and often end up deducing something negative.

I am glad Nokia World is just around the corner and I assume many announcements will come with it. Someone from Nokia should be in the forums (at least 8x5) to answer the many questions and doubts that will come.

maemo.org Downloads and Ovi store are compatible channels, and each one should concentrate on its mission.

In maemo.org you have a channel specializing in open source and community applications. Trying to fit there monetization schemes, advertisement and commercial partnerships is basically a mission impossible.

In the Ovi store you have a channel specializing in commercial applications. Trying to fit there community transparency and free software ways of working is basically a mission impossible,

Yes, maemo.org can and will host binary blobs, and Ovi can and will host open source software. But why force any of these channels to be merged with the other? Maemo Select will pick the best of both channels and will showcase it to Maemo users. Nokia can keep pushing its agenda with Ovi and the community can keep pushing their agenda with maemo.org

No matter what, app marketing, reviews and worth of mouth will be one of the main drivers deciding what people download and try.

I wonder if it will be possible to use OVI store as some kind of 'Donate' button for maemo OS developers. 'If you like my application buy it from OVI Store'.

Not quite.

a) Ovi left NIT-users out in the cold ever since it started. No app store, no integration with Share on Ovi (other than sending files by mail), no integration with Contacts on Ovi, nothing. So who's the one who doesn't care?

b) I really, really try to use Ovi services. They're just so unpleasant and hostile. Sometimes it's little details in the UI, sometimes it's a service simply not working at all. I cannot sync with Contacts, files I mail to Share get there only sometimes, I set a preferred UI-language and it's gone next time I log in, the Store offers me (paid) content that, upon installation, tells me it's incompatible with my device,.... I don't know. For a Nokia user, Ovi is nothing to be proud of or recommend to friends. - I still support it, though, by simply using it as an experimental thing. I even tried to support it by sending mails to Ovi support, but they never react in any way other than saying "OK, we see you're having a problem, but that's not our business" (in other words, of course).

So it's not fair to say "NIT users don't care about the OVi initiative". I, personally, do care a lot. But I'd rather have somebody inside Nokia finally take care of this damn thing!

I have actually proposed a donation scheme to be integrated in Ovi for open source software, based partly on the discussion in maemo.org now and in the past.

Too soon to tell whether it will be implemented, when and how but at least the initial reactions were positive.

Depends on whether the developer wants to sell the application via Ovi Store.

I don't get the fuzz btw. You can just use a package manager like on a Linux distribution and decide if you want the non-free/proprietary/closed_source repository of Ovi Store. If this is kept simple and easy, like in Cydia, it'll be a user-friendly experience while allowing control.

@allnameswereout: yeah, but BB Connect is usually licensed by the OEM and it's tied to specific models Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed.
