I'd buy it at $300 USD or less.

Poll is missing "depending on cost" option.

I voted here, pre-ordered as soon as the price was published, but changed my preorder place and now I have pretty decent 24month plan for about my current montly payment.
I agree with the first part of your post as well.
It is also stealing the time of the person who now might have to add a new posting guideline to a sticky for fear others might be encouraged to try even more attention seeking 'tricks"

My vote is somewhere in >> HERE <<

I preordered my N900 earlier today!
For the past few months, after years and years of S60 phone after S60 phone, i've really felt the urge to try something different. It was just after these feelings started that the N900 began to appear on the internet, so I looked into it and decided that was the way to go.
Now' i've never used a maemo device before, and if i'm honest i've never used anything Linux before!! So I imagine i've got ALOT to learn, but I really can't wait to get started

I already have mine on pre-order, because its a true Linux OS.

I got sick of Windows mobile and especially the crappy Qualcomm chipset with its aweful drivers on Windows. Also 99% of WM software seems to cost $15, even if its a simple mundane application. The quality of the software does not seem all that great either.

Android on the other hand, just doesn't appeal.

Overall, its the hardware accelerated OS based on Debian and tipped the scale for me. As soon as I read about the N900 I knew I had to get it. The idea of having the same flexibility and drivers properly optimised for the hardware. I would never try to write Python code on Windows Mobile, its just too slow and clunky. On the N900 I think it may be totally plausible though, and that is cool.

Do not get my wrong, its certainly not perfect. I too would have been happier if the screen had been a little bit bigger, the camera a little bit better, but I have been using my Xperia X1 for almost a year now at only 3" and coped so it will seem like a HUGE upgrade gaining even 0.5". My only worry is the camera looks like it might not be quite as good due to squeezing more megapixels into such a small lens and sensor.

I love my N800, but I've had enough with Nokia. We've been waiting for 2 years for this device, only to find they've significantly shrunk the screen (but not the physical device), and removed turn-by-turn sat nav.

I'm also fed up with wayfinder (way-flounder) not getting me to where I need to go properly, and having to de-drm my ebooks (ereader.com) and audio books (audible.com). OK, so the N900 has added exchange support. which was sorely missing, but that's not enough to compensate for the other ommissions.

So, I'm going to go with the HTC HD2. Nice big screen (bigger than the N8x0), TomTom is available, official players/readers, native exchange support. I know there is a lot of negative feedback against WinMo, but I used it for long enough that it doesn't really bother me. Plus the new HTC Sense, with WinMo 6.5 look like they should address most of those (minor to me) issues.

Sorry maemo, I love your openness, but it's time to say "until next time".

This is exactly like my situation! I REALLY REALLY got to start learning Linux! And the N900 is a huge upgrade for me.. But I cancelled my pre-order (with amazon.com yesterday) because it seems that N900's price is going down pretty fast even before it's being released!!! So I am going to have to pinch myself and wait for a little bit more time until I find the best best price and then I will definately purchase it..

Also I want to see what is going to happen in Maemo Summit 2009.. It will (hopefully) clear up all of my confusions about it..

Btw! Sorry guys if I "stole" your attention that definately wasn't my plan when I created this thread.. I just wanted to make this thread interesting..

You say this based on you extensive experience with the device and its screen?

That's what I use.
Sorry, didn't see the question.
Same solution for me, just plug the usb drive and open file manager. (usb power pack plugged too for HDDs, with a Y cable)
