Well, back in the Android world, the Xperia X10 offers:

* 8.1 megapixel camera
* Up to 16x digital zoom
* Auto focus
* Intelligent face recognition features
* Geo tagging
* Image and video stabilizer
* Photo and video light
* Send to web (photo and video upload)
* Smile detection
* Touch focus
* Video recording
* Recent shot tray

But the keyboard's the killer for me so it's still the N900.

I *really* like the X10 specs on paper, and if it were down to this alone, I suspect it would be my top choice. However, it has one big problem that ruins it for me.

The problem is the release date. Seeing as how I'm ready to get a phone pretty soon, I simply won't wait another 6 months for an X10. It's not that I'm adverse to waiting, I could easily wait another year, it's just that I'd always be waiting for the next best thing. The Droid/N900/X10 do what I would like them to do, but only the Droid/N900 are coming out very soon, and since the N900 has the best combo of features for me, I choose it.

But who knows what next year will bring!

Motorola Droid and Droid Eris available in stores now. According to Boy Genius Report, stock levels insanely high.

Maybe, just maybe, this is how you release a smartphone? Release early, release often? Get a jump on holiday season?

Update: Holy smokes!!! $149 w/2 year contract at Wally World. Too bad I don't shop there (and it isn't an N900).

X10 better have something to justify $900 expected price.

I am not seeing $250 more product compared to the N900. As far as Snapdragon and 3430, Snap uses more clock to make up for weaker DSP and GPU and all sane Snap device makers will force underclock due to power consumption and heat concerns. I guess the power would drain out before the heat would be an issue though.

Not to mention 32gb of class 6 memory built into N900. That is $100 of margin in favor of N900 and makes the gap $350.

The X10 is also very stylish and thin, and presumably has a very good camera (though this may not turn out to be the case). While these two characteristics may not factor into the buying decisions of some of this forum's members, I suspect they are of great importance to many casual consumers.

Were the X10 polished and available tomorrow, I would seriously consider buying it.

It really is interesting to see how these convergent devices differ. E.g. they all have a camera, but one may choose to specialize in camera functionality. Or they all can play music but the iPhone (with its iPod history) is better at music playing (the interface and all).

Xperia had a good camera and features, so X10 should too. Camera is a feature people consider on higher end "phones".

Another reason I like the N900 As device like Droid ($800) and X10 ($900) are released, it makes me appreciate the N900 more.

People need to appreciate the N900 also has 32gb of fast memory and not some slowish class 2 card like Droid has.

It's not surprising. Windows Mobile has the same problem too, it's the trade-off you get when you try to target a wider platform rather than a limited platform like Apple does. Which is why although its great that we're seeing really powerful smartphones coming out on Android and WM that there won't be that much software that would necessarily benefit from the hardware because developers would usually just target the lowest common denominator. Their primary benefit would be being able to multi-task better.
