Use a sound file editor to add silence in to the start of the sound file.

Ha, ha, that is what I call a hack. But, hey, until we get a better solution, that is not a bad idea. I'll have to give that a try (when my device arrives).

Such a small thing, makes such a big difference, phone or not a phone it still rings when i tshouldnt, In an ideal world we would remember to silence it in a meeting, but we dont.

Long way round to saying I think the hardware button is an excellent idea

Actually the hardware button isn't a good idea by your estimation quoted. Ideally, the mobile device should adapt to the context (meeting in the calendar, located at a place deemed 'work,' around others devices belonging to persons noted as 'manager' or 'executive' in your address book, etc.).

The fact that context was not taken into consideration with this mobile computer in terms of utilizing this aspect of its communication from the default setup is probably more damming than missing a button - to which you are asking a person to modify their behavior to the device and context instead of the created modifying itself to the creator/user

Try that and see what happens for you - just not in another meeting ok.
Tried the mild tap on the back and it didn't work.

Here are what I figure out using flip:

Take it out and flip the screen down on your other hand or leg(best solution so far)

If the phone is in your pant, then make sure the screen is facing your leg. When your receive a call, just grab the phone and tab it against your leg. It works but I get 50/50. Sometime you might accidentally accepted the call.

I think the silent/shock sensor is on the side with "N900" logo. Everytime I flip the phone and tap it with the N900 side, it would give me higher success rate. The "nokia" side with the camera would give me 100% failure rate.

"Turn to silence" is pretty useless after the first call... feel free to vote for bug #6828 if you would like this potentially useful feature improved in a future release.

bug #6828 is a different bug.

I have an N900 and the same need to silence the ringer by pressing the power or volume button by feel while still in the pocket. Please vote for bug #7878

maybe a brainstorm for an app/feature that adds a silent mode to the powerbutton-dubbeltap-lock when there is an incomming call?

So the bugzilla entry says that it has been closed and moved. Does any one know what that means?

Edit: Never mind. I should have read my email first. It is proposed that this idea should be submitted as a brainstorm entry.
