The key to remember is that you only have the 'Now playing' list available to you when creating playlists in the UI. Try these steps:

Preconditions: you have written down all the tracks you wish to add in the correct order to ensure you don't mix things up.
  1. Launch the media player
  2. Go to 'Now playing' and clear any current tracks (Menu->Clear current playlist). You should now be returned to the 'Music' view.
  3. Find the track you wish to add.
  4. Tap and hold over the track until the context menu is shown.
  5. Select the 'Add to current play list', tick off your list.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 for the next track. If at any time you add a track in the wrong order or as will happen a tap and hold gets interpreted as a tap so that playback of all tracks in the current view kicks off, you are welcome curse profusely before returning to step 2. Once you get bored or too angry to continue move onto step 7.
  7. Once you have been through that pain go to the now playing view and admire your work, just don't forget to save the playlist (Menu->Save playlist) so you don't have to go through all that pain again (for this playlist)

I have yet to find a truly great playlist editor but the maemo 5 media player takes a close second as the worst.
Thank You! I was really struggling with creating playlists until reading your post.

On a serious note though, you can always download a different media player for your N900, there are a bunch of them out there right now.. search for them here on the forum..
bandora: can you point me to links for players on this forum (or anywhere else)? Thanks!

Thanks for the simple and comprehensive playlist creation guide.

A couple of queries:
- how do you remove tracks from the playlist again? I now have a 430 track playlist, but want to take a few back off
- where are the playlists stored? I've been unable to find them anywhere on the device (so can't manually remove entries)

Ok guys.. im BAK !! hahahahha

i can tell you the mooooossssssttt easyest way to creat playlist...without having any knoweledge of using a keyboard. loolz... im serious...

step 1 ) copy alll your songs to ur n900...put them in a folder...(lets assume you name ur folder as "songs")

now, after loading all ur crap in to it,.....ummm lets say u got 20 gb of songs in it...and now u wana make few playlist.. sorting as... rap playlist, desi playlist..e.t.c

step 2) now open your windows media player
on the left side, click on play list. creat a new play list (make sure its saved as M3U) and look, if u dont know how to creat a play list in a frekin windows media player.. as a grade 3 kid.

now, go to my computer, n900, ur music folder , select all songs, open in media player (not in playlist)
now, u got all the songs on ur right, all u gota do is drag and drop the songs from right to the center..(ur playlist section) when ur done, just save the play list( save auto in vista and win 7)

thats it ur 90% done..loooolzz
now, on the left of the media player, right click playlist>open file location

now copy that play list FILE (its supposed to be veryyy tiny...few kbs...) in the same folder as ur songs in ur n900

open the playlist in a note pad.

now u must be seen a million of songs paremeters like this
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:0,01 - Addat (Apniisp.Com).mp3
G:\Songs\01 - Addat (Apniisp.Com).mp3

#EXTINF:0,01 - Bhulado (Apniisp.Com).mp3
G:\Songs\01 - Bhulado (Apniisp.Com).mp3

#EXTINF:0,02 - Aankhon Mein Teri - Om Shanti Om.mp3
G:\Songs\02 - Aankhon Mein Teri - Om Shanti Om.mp3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now in the note pad it self, CLICK edit, REPLACE

in the dialog box.
FIND WAT: \
REPLACE WIT: /
-----------------------------------------
THATS IT...
NOW OPEN THE EDIT, REPLACE AGAIN

FIND WAT:G:
REPLACE WIT: \home\user\MyDocs
------------------------------------------------------
HIT SAVE. I MEAN SAVE THE TEXT DOCUMENT.

UNPLUG UR N900 FROM USB, GOT TO THE MUSIC PLAYER, GO TO PLAYLIST, AND U WILL FIND UR PLAYLIST....

------------------
THE WHOLE IDEA IS TO CREAT A PLAYLIST IN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER, (M3U FORMATE), COPY THAT PLAY LIST TO UR N900, OPEN IT AS NOTE PAD, CHANGE THE BACK SLASH TO FORWARD SLAH, CHANGE THE G: TO \HOME\USER\MYDOCS
----------------------------------------
AND REPEAT THIS AS MANY TIMES U WANT WITH AS MANY PLAYLIST U WANT....AND FINALLYENJOY UR PHONE, AND U CAN BUY A NEW NOKIA MEMORY CARD WHICH JUST CAME OUT, ITS 42GB. SO PUT ALL UR SONGS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR !

ok...I'm trying to follow your steps, but I'm lost.
This is what I have as a test:
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:0,Cayos Cochinos.mp3
F:\Music\Cayos Cochinos.mp3

#EXTINF:0,Diving Roatan.mp3
F:\Music\Diving Roatan.mp3

#EXTINF:0,Diving Utila.mp3
F:\Music\Diving Utila.mp3

#EXTINF:0,Halliburton Wreck Utila.mp3
F:\Music\Halliburton Wreck Utila.mp3

What exactly do I change?

F: should be changed to \home\user\MyDocs\

it should look like this then:

\home\user\MyDocs\Music\Cayos Cochinos.mp3

then...... change all the slashes \ to....

forward slashes /

it should look like this at the end...

/home/user/MyDocs/Music/Cayos Cochinos.mp3
