To use dpkg to manually install a package is _not_ meant for novices. You should use the normal installation method instead, i.e. install out of a repository using the application manager. If the application is not yet available in extras or wherever it is, then it's better to wait for it to end up there (because then it will also have been better tested) instead of working with the command line on commands that require admin/root privileges.

well, I can understand novices owning a N900 and wanting to play with those Nintendo emulators for which they only have the debs... there's also a repository somebody set up I think, not sure.. but people is used to the windows standalone installers..

Personally I don't love the repository system.. it makes me too bound to somebody/thing else (and the emulators problem is a perfect example of this), and there are many moments you cannot have a internet connection but still need a application you may have a installer for.

"Nokia N900" folder in the File Manager is /home/user/MyDocs in the terminal.

And if you hate this shyt you should probably to something else instead.

Just a question. If I was to install a .deb file wrote for 2008 on my n900 would that work. Or would it be a good possibilty that it would stick the files in my root directory? I really dont want to fill that up.

There is not a file I have in mind. I just like to install stuff to see what it looks like.

it most probably will stick the files to root fs. and it might work or not, impossible to say with this info.
