Yeah, I can't really see these series of devices being more phone than tablet. Only because they were originally developed to be internet tablets and have only recently had a phone slapped on top.

I think it's unlikely Nokia will make a phone before tablet with Maemo 6 unless they branch out to another series of devices.

Personally I haven't tried out Maemo just yet but with all the Linuxness it might not be too bad of a phone in the sense of customisation and opensourcness! But I couldn't imagine more of the hardcore Linux enthusiasts wanting more of a phone than a tablet with hardware keyboard etc..

However if they do make a series of phones with Maemo 6 I wouldn't really see it as a bad thing (aslong as they had portrait!) A great competitor to Android, seeing as that's a layer of java on top where as Maemo isn't?

Also with a wide range of phones running the Maemo 6 platform, more affordable and smaller phones for the majority, I'm sure that Maemo could grow to be something great with the software being developed, the customisation available for the user.

But I don't see Maemo getting as popular as it could with it only on internet tablet phones like the N900 as not every one can afford one, find them too big and so on.

What we know:

- Maemo 6 with Qt based user interface
- Probably the same - or very similar - CPU and GPU
- Probably multitouch capacitive screen - the same size

Overall - hardware will be quite similar to N900 with exception of screen.

So what could be added? My takes:

- out of the box all Bluetooth profiles
- out of the box working FM radio
- out of the box USB host mode (at least OTG); if that mean second USB port due to frakked up standards - let it be
- I think it is time for > 5Mpx camera - 8 at least or make existing 5Mpx really, really good; now it may be good comparing to other phones but comparing to even p&s cameras it is crap
- make it thinner OR put bigger battery; I understand both things are mutually exclusive and only one of things can happen but current situation is far from perfection - personally prefer thinner device
- full-size kickstand
I hope the screen is at least as large as the Droid, and I hope the keyboard is 4 rows like the Droid. And I hope GPS works without an internet connection. And I'd like to see a great turn-by-turn nav application.

USB host mode and further improvements to the camaera would be great too, but my top priorities are the items I mentioned earlier.

Get it out and delivered to my hand by Christmas 2009 . If not, a tracking number before new year 2010 is acceptable.

My votes:

- HDMI output
- Bluetooth HID support out of the box (kb/mouse)
- Bigger battery (I think 1800mah would be perfect)
- Slightly bigger device would suit me (though probably not most); bigger kb, slightly bigger screen, couple hardware buttons to bring up the task switcher / home screen
- Simultaneous 802.11/bluetooth support (it can be done)
- 512mb rootfs / 512mb ram
- SD instead of microSD
- Keep the resistive touchscreen! Multitouch/capacitive is for bored yuppies.
- Cradle connector, offering HDMI output, charging, audio in/out, USB host... imagine dropping it in a cradle with an LCD screen, keyboard and mouse set up. It would be totally adequate as an HTPC, kitchen computer, alarm clock, etc.
- A pony would be nice, too.

Ok, and the following is probably not even remotely realistic, but imagine running all the cooling conduits to the docking connector, so while the phone is docked, it can upclock the processor to 1+ghz, and dump excess heat into the cradle (which has a heat sink).

That would make it a fairly powerful laptop, perfect for travelling (cradle could be small.. kept at the hotel). Or, go to work, drop it in a cradle, and get a full-size screen / kb / mouse. Get home, drop it in a cradle.. watch some movies. Bluetooth in some game controllers, and play some games. In the car... cradle. GPS navigate, listen to music, etc.

Ok, I'm dreamin.

*EDIT* at the risk of almost going offtopic here.. A remote heat sink would actually be pretty easy to implement with a peltier device; even though the metal-metal contact wouldn't be great, a 5mm x 1cm pad could probably transfer out enough heat from inside the device if it was cooled to 30C below ambient with a peltier device. If it needs to remove 5W, the unit would draw, say, 20W, but even that is still around laptop territory. Point is, this could totally work.

More RAM
More Apps
Multitouch RESISTIVE screen (there is such thing and it's very accurate + responsive)
Wireless N
HD rear camera (dont't care about more MP.. but better lens that can shoot video with high fps and hd)..
A little bit of a faster cpu... Cortex A9?

o 512MB NAND is available today, so go for it.
o Either get rid of the GPS, or use a proper one (MTK or SiRF Star III). As it is now it's a low-quality add-on which just takes up space.
o Proper, old-fashioned charging plug. A lot of people whined about 'missing USB charging' in the past, and look where that got us.
o The above will allow USB OTG and USB host mode working again.
o External, full-size SD slot. Get rid of the internal micro-SD slot, it's useless.
That's about it. Optional, if possible:
o If Wireless N (full 2.5GHz+5GHz) becomes possible, go for it
o If 512MB RAM becomes possible, go for it
o If there's any spare room: An additional button somewhere (now we find ourself a bit short too often).

That ain't gonna happen if they want to sell their devices in Europe.

External, yes. But I see no reason not to keep the micro SDHC slot - it saves a huge amount space and works just like its big-format brother. Granted, you can cram more things on a full-sized SD, but since N900 does not support SDIO (or at least it seems that way), there is really no advantage.
