My email tends to hang for a while quite often, it usually comes back after a few minutes though, I thought this was the wlan signal but now I'm not convinced.
Pulseaudio & sound seems to be "buggy" at the moment.
I have had it continually beeping at me until I switched off and on again.
Also I had pulse audio constantly at 20% cpu for no reason I could see, again switched off and on to fix.

Please run "top -n 1" and post the results here. You also should execute "df -h" to see a report from your disk partitions and their usage and post the results here.

Pressing the power switch on/off will not give you a true "reset" because the battery is still connected to the phone, electrons are still flowing.

Not quite sure what you mean - he's actually right.

Schrodingers Electrons are in neither an on or an off state until you take the battery out. Then you can see the PCB and as we know from quantum theory act of obsevation has and effect on the quantum state of electrons - so just by seeing the PCB you actually reset the electrons in the device and they are no longer confused. (Please make sure you hold the N900 horizontal when taking the battery out though otherwise the electrons tend to drain out of the battery terminals and onto the floor).

As an aside all of these issues can be avoided by encasing electonics in clear cases. It's why the original Imac was see-through - Apple had a really issue with confused electons at that point although they now seem to have it under control.

Not sure how to copy xterminal results (tried shift, control and P for snapshot - never been able to do it anywhere of the device, maybe I just don't manage to touch all 3 at the same time). Top 3 results are:

57.2% /usr/lib/tracker/t
16.3% top -n 1
8.1% /usr/bin/intellisy

Is that good or bad?

On df-h I get:

rootfs 73% used
ubi0:rootfs 73% used

It seems to be the tracker mentioned throughout this thread. Top is always very resource heavy itself, so those figures seem to be normal.

Maybe someone smarter could help with the tracker problem? Options coming to mind are waiting the indexing to finnish, killing the process or maybe using nice to handle the issue?

If tracker is going mental (had the same problem with my laptop and eventually disabled tracker completly).

Is it reasonable to suggest moving some stuff from you "home" folder into another folder elsewhere on the filesystem.

I don't have my N900 (see sig) yet so not sure if this would work.

Tracker is taking up 57.2%!

Have you added any new media files recently? If not, I wonder why it's trying to re-index. Maybe it got stuck on a file or something..

Try killing tracker, you'll have to find the PID, and then kill that process. Seems like tracker hasn't improved since I tried it a year ago..

settings can be restored pretty well if you just do a backup before reflashing.

Do I backup to the phone? I tried to back up using PC suite but it said phone not supported or something.

Presumably I do not lose any of my files. They just stay on the device. Correct? I have over 20gb of media files on the device.

exclude media files and do the backup with devices own software to memory card.
