The swipe up for caps has been in place since Chinook/Diablo I think. On those versions you can also swipe right for space. Swipe left for backspace. It also works on the N900 too.

I actually use it alot, sad to see they're taking this out.

I didn't know about this feature either. It's another reason to use the virtual keyboard. I have had a lot of trouble typing caps with the physical keyboard, so much so that I have made hitting the shift key TWICE a normal practice, then hit the letter to make the cap, then hit the shift key ONCE to get back into non-caps mode. It's clunky but it works.

That's one reason why I am usually using the virtual keyboard and not the physical one.

Good catch, benny1967 and General Antilles.

Good thing we can just grab the source code and... um... oh.

Sigh. Another strike against open development.

(as I side note, I've gotten very very fast on the N900's hardware keyboard!)

all i'm saying/speculaing is read the below link
Nokia announced they invested in swype in december, so we could be seeing the ground work being implemented for a big swype update in the future.

The whole thing is so depressingly bizarre, there has to be some secret plan that we just don't know yet.
Secret plan? I doubt it: Ragnar of Nokia already said in this thread that Nokia is dumping the up-swipe so it can implement the iPhone way of on-the-fly correcting.

I wish it were for Swype, but I think it's just more iPhonism. Even in English I've always used the up-swipe-for-capitals. I, too, will miss it.

But if I had an N900 I'd also miss the stylus keyboard. That got killed for *no* reason.

I can only concur that the upstroke feature of the VKB is excellent. And the argument "This new behavior is much more useful to input chars using the FKB since it will allow fast typing (user presses two places at a time) as well as correction." (from the bug report) make no sense whatsoever. benny1967 explained why this is so, and I agree.

And yes, that the stylus version went away at an earlier stage also counts as a downgrade.
