have you tried other phones mikec..

surely we want this phone to be at least as good as the competition- its seriously lagging in basic functions with the other market leaders.. you can be critical about the phone you love.

Thought this was about gripes but since mysticrokks asked

I don't really have gripes about N900 either. I've had N810 for a long time and was really looking for N810 with 3G in it. The fact that I now don't have to lug around separate phone either is a big plus.

You could say I knew what I was getting into. N900 has been exactly what I wanted. To me web browsing was the most important use case and I believe N900 is the best choice by far in the "fits your pocket" category.

I do lots of other things with it too, but I guess there is no need to list all that. I certainly didn't expect it to be the best possible business phone or GPS device. If I had needed that I might have bought N97 or something.

Sure but I believe in constructive criticism. Bugs.maemo and Brainstorm are the best place for me to vent by creativity, and really help make this device better.

1) Would love better battery life
2) No gps lock without network connection

Hope it gets even better after firmware updates.

It's ok. I knew exactly what I was getting - and what features I would be sacrificing - when I ordered. That's probably a lot of the reason why I'm content. I can understand (as I tried to explain in our last conversation!) why people want the device to do something more, even if I don't share that need. I hope eventually it will fulfill a good proportion of everyone's requirements - whether thanksto Nokia or our devs.

I can think of lots more things I want to do with it - many of them are already under development. And I find that if you have a good idea and can make a case for it, the community and the devs are incredibly responsive. That makes the device even more exciting for me. I showed the sheep game to a colleague yesterday - she was completely bowled over with the thought it had started as my idea, and people had built it.

Edit: I agree with one item on your wish list - a decent office app would be good to have. Docs-to-go viewer is too weak.

No specific gripes here either, though there are things I would like to see implemented or improved. Specifically:

- like Kathy, a decent Documents editor (NOT just viewer) would be very useful.
- Bluetooth keyboard support, I really would love to be able to hook up my Stowaway to the N900 (I'm pretty sure this will come soon)
- email notifications could be better, don't really like the way it just tells you how many emails you have but doesn't tell you which accounts they come from (I have three) and then you have to look through them all to find out.
- an N64 emulator would be fantastic (again, I'm sure this will come)

But yeah, maybe my usage scenarios just make the N900 a good fit for me. The things I use most are the web browser, Mastory, camera, gpodder/Panucci, music/video player and all of these things have been working perfectly for me.

#1 for me is battery life. It just drains like crazy anytime it is connected to wifi. To extend the battery life, I have been manually turning off the connection when I'm not actively using it.

#2 is the browser. It's pretty good, but it doesn't seem to cache the pages. Anytime I want to go back to a previous page, it reloads the whole page again.

I'm still working with the email. The phone works fine. A think a more robust calender/address book would be nice. I really liked the suggestion on using pictures for incoming calls and contacts.

I haven't used the mapping app yet. I've used others in the past from google on my blackberry to the AT&T map app. I would really like to see the google maps working on the N900.

Thats it for now! Still learning the ropes and having fun discovering all the cool stuff!
