Could it be possible to make quick launch similar to most desktop OS's alt+f2 functionality, for example if you click ctrl+L the launcher would pop up and you could type the name of app or command you want to launch and maybe even configure a few apps for which icon is shown always in the pop up window and you could just click to launch?

I bet it will be possible, and this is not a so bad idea
I could leave the things as they are now and add this feature (that would be sufficient also for who wants the widgets in the "power menu").

Is this actually an app/daemon that runs or does it just change the standard functionality of the status region?

why with my quick launch bar, one button is smaller??

Uhm... strange, which is the first shortcut ? (x-terminal has a different icon for me)
BTW I setted a 64x64 fixed dimension for buttons, to avoid this kind of issues, it will be available for the next release.

Nice app, but the problem is that the apps are unsorted, so finding an installed app is not pleasant, could you please sort the apps by name so ww can easily find them
