Ouch, sorry, no.

Simply a reference to slashdot, where anonymous comments are signed "anonymous coward".

I know Reggie said that there was no plan to change anything and this is mostly idle discussion, but openness always goes a long way to insuring civility. Something as simple as making it public who posts what tags would help keep people accountable.

Far fewer people will posts insulting tags if they know it is public knowledge that they are being bullies.

I don't know if the TMO forum system is able to do this though.

As far as how to do it, why not have a popup when you hover your mouse over a tag that shows "Tagged by: somebody".

I thought this is already available to mods, so abuse is, in theory, still punished. What additional options are available to the average user (other than poking back, polite or otherwise)?

Here's a example of tag usage, from one of the most useless threads on Maemo Talk imho, anyway:

1500 is mine!!!, 3-4 weeks, all your 1.2 belong to us, apple sucks, could be next decade, fearuncertaintydoubt, fictional update, fud, i already got it, it will be on 12.21.2012, may be it's a myth?, may be next week, maybe april fools, maybe not, mukalaka hinki, patience is a virtue, patience wastes your life, the cake is a lie, the littlest hobo, there is no spoon, this thread makes me sad, update? orly?, who??, why!?, worst thread ever
as you see, this kind of tagging is unhelpful and not needed. (still, funny) Now, even you add a proper and useful tag on this thread, It will vanish or look weird because of other funny tags.

I think humor tags are okay (simply, because they're making me smile) but It should have a limit, and should not be insulting. (ie. "worst thread ever") Maybe granting OP with tag administration privileges on thread can help. Otherwise, every user with more than 300 posts can tag anything they dont like with insulting tags, anonymously. For example, if some user started a thread like "why X is not included in N900? It's ridiculous!" and I see it, I can tag it with "worst thread ever", "OP is stupid", "remove this thread pls" etc. without giving out my identity, and any proper reason, even if I don't have any idea about what he's talking about. And if OP is under 300 posts, it means he cannot do anything to give a proper answer.

Actually, even if value tags get "lost in the thread tag cloud", they're still picked up by the search engine.

But sure, at some point even the humor tags go beyond reason. I would *hope* anyone with over 300 posts would get that, but...

On a related note I'm encouraged by the maturity and civility in this discussion.

Humorous tags all the way! In fact, I think boring tags should be used with extreme self-restraint!

Funny tags do NOT make it more difficult to find threads. The nature of the tag cloud is based on repetition. The nature of humor is more often than not based on originality; thus, a funny tag is unlikely to be repetitive, and so would not skew the results from searching.

As to who can edit tags or not, I think it is completely reasonable and fair that more senior members have more power. If I am offended by funny tags on my thread, then I will think how I've made a donkey of myself rather than thinking about how to get back at those who (most likely for good reasons) poke fun at me.

A few thoughts:

It might be helpful if there was a limit on the number of tags per thread. Sometimes, they get a bit out of hand - one person starts being funny and three dozen people copy. Three dozen funny tags per thead isn't funny any more.

Can 'ordinary mortals' remove tags? I can see the box to do so. It might be helpful if I could not remove tags placed by a moderator (Or the OP?). Of course, that assumes that mods are humourless (which is a requirement of the job, no?) It would mean that Thread X about Subjext Y could have, say 2 serious tags highlighting its subject. And six spaces for me to make witty comments. Once the spaces are fllled, the oldest 'silly' tag would get deleted if I posted a new one. That would keep the humour fresh, and prevent any silly topic getting too much attention in the cloud.

Somehow we need to make sure that the fun and frolic doesn't get in the way of the actual serious business of the site.

An alternative method would be to have two methods of commenting on threads - one serious, one silly, and only put the serious in the cloud.

Tag clouds have their limitations, though. A tag grows in size depending on the number of theads about it, unless I'm not mistaken. Some of our most important topics have only one or two (giant mega whopper) thread. FMMS being a good example.

We 'ordinary mortals' can only remove our own tags.

Mods do see who tag what and I assume they do remove the inappropriate ones.

I'm not suggesting average users get ANY powers other than the power to see who posted what tag. Its just transparency, and that leads to accountability.

If douchebag123 knows that most people can't see that he was the one who posted some totally inappropriate and offensive comment then he will feel right at home doing so.

If he knows that it is possible for everyone to see that he was the one who posted that comment, he knows his public standing will probably go down and will be less likely to post offensive things to begin with.

i really don't see the problem. - if somebody really uses the tag system as a search tool... if he or she does a search for threads tagged with "mms"... how would the quality of this search suffer if some of the threads returned as results were also tagged "so funny" and "fart thread"? i don't see a problem at all.
