Sure, depending on how you look at it. The fact is that how you are perceived is important. Another fact is that typing on a little computer lends itself to sloganeering on my part for the purpose of abbreviation and picking at technicalities and overlooking the big picture on yours. Dimestore psychologizing is beside the point.

Destroyed your civilisation and wiped their names from the history books, all for buying an n900. DAMN YOU NOKIA!!!!!!!

I doubt your'e going to get a definitive answer that suits your needs, without physically using both phones. What might make the 900 a winner for some won't necessarily apply to you, same applies with the droid.

But if you're a texting demon then the 900 kb is streets ahead imho after using both phones.

I can't comment on the openness of the OS as I haven't delved that deep, but if your tech savvy enough to feel that you'll use the potential on offer then it's the 900.

My advice would be take the various comments as a rough guide, draw up your own list of real requirements and go and have a play with both.

as I said before. I don't think the droid is available in australia. and I know the N900 isn't

Is there a phone with a similar keyboard to the droid that I could compare it with?

A lot of people here tend to "sell" the N900 with openness, customization, linux OS, neglecting to mention that this really is a well-rounded and full-featured consumer product. I'm not a linux geek or a programmer (although I am a geek in general and I'm not afraid to delve deep if necessary), so I can understand if these arguments alone aren't convincing enough for someone.

Here are some of my reasons for preferring N900:
- Great integration of IM and VOIP into the OS, expandable by plugins
- Great integration of content sharing, expandable by plugins
- Varied and expandable codec support - can play pretty much anything I put on it
- Built it media streaming over home network (DLNA), internet radio streaming
- Best mobile browser which shows the real internet, including full flash
- Great connectivity - 3G HSPA, WiFi, BT, FM receiver + transmitter, IR(!)
- Very high pixel density display - 800x480 on 3.5"
- Awesome camera in good lighting, average for a cellphone in darkness. Shoots high res 800x480 video
- Great conversations app with threaded IM and SMS (although not merged)
- Lots of storage - 32GB built in, microSD slot for expansion, mass-storage mode supported
- TV out
- Powerful and flexible platform which allows a lot of freedom, from OS plugins and extensions to overclocking

Of course, there are some cons:
- Relatively basic phone functionality - no voice dialing is the one that bothers me most
- Relatively basic organization functionality, calendar lacking in features and has problems syncing to Google Cal via exchange
- Email client is pretty basic and clumsy
- Practically nonexistent Ovi / PC Suite support (may be coming soon, there is a registration for a new beta version in May, specifically targeted at N900 owners)
- Low volume of available software, in particular commercial software. This is mostly due to Nokia not having Ovi Store completely ready for the device yet, and due to the fact this is a niche device after all. There is some user created software, some is very high quality and most is very useful, but what is severely lacking, that is probably too much for the community, is an office suite and navigation (alternatives to Ovi Maps and Sygic)
- Device works almost entirely in landscape.
- Some reports of build quality issues, especially the USB port. I had no issues so far.
- Could use a bigger battery. Nokia made an odd choice of using the 1320mAh battery from the 5800, a much less HW intensive device.

Hope this brief summary helps you decide. Unfortunately I've never had an Android device, so I can't help you compare them directly.

If you are an everyday user that wants lots of apps and a larger user community, get a droid. The N900 is great as a 2nd phone for experimenting with, and programming for.

When you said you can't decide between the two I assumed you had a choice re availability, if you can't get either in Australia then you're kind of stuffed.
However it appears you can buy unlocked versions of the droid in Oz, the n900 will turn up in about a month.

So wait and see.

Mobicity.com.au sells both the N900 and the Droid in Australia with warranty.

If I was going to go with Android I would wait for the Dell Thunder at the end of this year.

n900 surely is a great piece of hardware but with the lack of some out of the box apps can be frustating...

yesterday i got out my old n95 and update some of the apps via wifi and i got to say i really mis some of the stuff which is available in symbian, in particular internet radio is rock solid and google maps now offers street view...

n900 is more like a linux portable pc completly open to those with development skills but limited due to the lack of apps for non technical people.

maybe we should just install multiboot on the n900 and use droid os instead of maemo.

the keyboard on the n900 is definately excellent.

the negative points on the n900 to me are, lack of great apps available on other mobile platforms, crap camera design due to shiny metal frame around camera(n95 has same camera but takes beteer videos/pics then n900 due to this design fault) and the battery can drain quite quick, less then 1 day.

about firefox, the new pre beta firefox is faster then the opera browser available on other platforms but it still has some features missing like some flash video sites, except for youtube which is working with an addon, some of the builds have not been as good, but i been updating mine daily from here
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...-mobile-1.9.2/

the n900 download is fennec deb file.
