i also get the "forgetful phone" when i switch sim cards (thus, when i take the battery out)... it asks to reset date and time every time, which is a minor pain, the rest stays pretty much the same and no data is lost...

that aside, i don't see any point in the rant...

Also it would be nice to do a little research, for example there's a couple of USSD widgets around for the N900.. And PR1.2 will fix that issue permenantly.. In case you don't know what USSD is... it's the *44444# stuff..

It seems to happen on machines that have a network drive mapped immediately after a "real" hard drive. I haven't confirmed this is related though. On these systems the work-around is: plug in the USB drive and wait for the chime. Navigate to Drive Management (NOT device manager) and see if the USB device is in the list of drives. If it is, Right click on it and then choose explore. The information should now be visible, but only in this window. FWIW, the USB drives are also available from the commandline. I have had a number of MCSE certified people look at this problem and none have given me a permanent solution, other than "I haven't seen that before."
I hope this helps.
I have never had the battery problem you describe and I do carry a spare battery. I have never needed it, but I do swap it to keep it charged just in case.
Take care.

This happens if another device is conflicting with the N900. I think in "Computer Management"/"Disk Management" you can see the N900 drives and set them to non-conflicting letters.

I've had to do this in the past, but I'm out of town for a few weeks, so I can't check the commands....

Good point about conflicts. I should have thought about the obvious first. Thanks.
I have had USB drives mount on top of network drives also. This causes some major problems if the machine is trying to communicate with a database and the mapped drive "changes"
The problem I mentioned in my previous post was not conflicting devices, unless they are phantoms That is why I had a few other people check out the problem. They thought "maybe" security related.
Take care.

No, it does not. Because Starfleet has not released UPC 2.0 technology for use by the common public.

While I can see the backup file on a display on the phone, it isn't visible on the PC. Where could it be hiding I ask myself?

If you can see it on the "phone", why do you call it hidden? Do you know how to copy/paste from a device to another?

One likes a measure of confirmation, confidence and certainty before proceeding. I have updated the firmware in the past without resorting to posts to this forum.

One likes a measure of computer skills before declaring a device faulty. Or a software suite. "Getting worse every day" You mean they update the software every day and make it worse than the day before? Curious. I have not noticed such.

One removes the battery from this phone, and it forgets the date, country, language, etc. I have never met a phone so forgetful.

Hence my concerns.
I have never met a user so disagreeable. Did you even take the time to read your post before submitting it?

As an addendum and only partially related to the problems of the OP: Vista was a mistake Microsoft tried to correct by releasing 7 as fast as they could. I used Vista for only a couple of months, and would like to forget about it. I do not know whether Vista has the following option or not, but in Windows 7, you can right click on any program's icon and select Troubleshoot Compatibility from the menu that comes up to ensure that Windows 7 runs it as a different version of Windows would. As the version it was designed for would. If you use that, the Nokia Suite works very well indeed under Windows 7. I installed it that way, I do not know whether more recent versions even require this to be done.

Instead of the inflammatory title you chose for your thread, I suggest renaming it to something more accurate, like: "Help! New user trying to find out how to use this device properly!"

Previous posts proved YOUR problems lie with the user and not with the device. I hope you acknowledge that fact by removing your unmerited complaints from this forum, because titles like the one you chose for your post can be discouraging.

I just took the battery out again this afternoon, and when I powered back up it asked me to check the date/time to make sure it was right. It was right, but it forgot that I prefer 24-hr. time. This is the first time it happened.

It backs up to the internal store, not the root fs. The internal store is not touched during flashing.

You can also backup to a storage card (I use a card - you can pull it out before flashing if you really want to embrace your inner paranoid)

I have backed up/restored countless times using the flawless backup app. It just works.

It does have a micro UPC port and the battery does work. What brings you to that conclusion? You have never seen my N900.

I have made no changes to my phone. No apps installed. Irrelevant anyway.

I have made no changes to the PC. I downloaded the standard Nokia software to my Vista PC before, and it was able to communicate with the phone and backup over a USB connection. The latest version of the software can't.

Everything is bog standard and not altered in any way.
