*loads his boom stick*

If you start the XTerminal, you can create the directory without a problem.
Code:
mkdir .pr0n
The real problem is that the pre-installed File Manager is designed to protect the casual user from ending up with a mess, hence the protection against creating directory names starting with ".".

One way to circumnavigate this, which is a wonderful way of putting it , is to install a more competent file manager. Like Midnight Commander, or mc for short. Then you can manage all your directories like a real Linux buff and move around your data as you please.

If the solution were more complicated than creating a directory with a name starting with ".", there might be a need for a GUI. Using PGP/GPG for example.

But in this case I completely agree with you.

There is probably not going to be a GUI coded to run WinSCP and SSH to create this directory locally on a windows machine using the WEP / WAP security on the WiFi routers and then transfer the file to a directory of your choosing o nthe phone!

Mate, the time you have spent banging on about this app you could have done all the above, set it up, explained to your "cute" girlfriend where everythihng is and how to get there etc etc. Come on man, pull your finger out and DIY.
Hmm...u think i dont know that??

What u told about creating hidden files in windows is true...but those hidden files can also be viewed

open the command promt

Hiding
=====

attrib +h "filename"(file will be hidden)

Unhide
=====

attrib -h "filename"(file will be visible)

u can also give PID(process id) of another process(eg:control panel,my computer) to the file you want to lock and make it visible...

But thats windows man....am talikg about Linux

Y cant a App be made for our n900 with simple GUI...is it so hard(Hey am not a linux guru by the way).thats the problem...

What's "personal pics" to you might be pr0n to someone else. And, be honest now, don't you think that most of the people wanting to protect their "data" are doing it for teh pr0n?

But what u said about creating a file using "." is a good idea.
It's a terrible idea if you want to protect your data from anyone who is the least into Linux.

But it'll be good if we have a nice GUI based App for this
If the solution is complicated, there is a definite need for a GUI. The solution above is not.

so tell me are u going to do something about this App???
I'll think about it as soon as you look at the lists I made and identify the attacker(s) you want to protect your data from.

Do you even read the answers? We already told you that you just need to use a different file manager, they have GUIs and are also able to hide files (and unhide them).
Please nod if you understood me.

I hope I made the colouring thing right, looks like your first post so it should be right.

You still didn't answer from whom you want to hide the things, hidden folders may work when hiding from kids and some friends but not from the police or CIA or anyone using his brain (well, I know this is opposed to most police men) (think of photorec, it will copy all images to the computer from a device, even many deleted ones).
And if you want the GUi so badly (which seems to be the case, as you bump this thread everyday (bumping is rude, too)) there are two possibilities:
  • Create the app yourself, with things like the QT SDK even monkeys can write N900 apps
  • Wait for someone to make it, but they won't make it faster if you ask every hour. So, really, please wait but don't bump every hour.

Well, "cute photos, if you know what I mean"
Seems that we don't know what he ment.

Peng (should be a shooting sound). Where did you get that you can't create a file beginning with a dot in linux? The N900 doesn't allow it because it would hide the file and then you could't get it back with this file manager, that's just noob protection. A simple "mv file .file" in any linux terminal on any linux computer in the world will hide a file. But try creating a folder named con on a windows machine

"if u know what i mean" for some people means their girl friend's nude pics...
but for me its not nude pics, its just cute pics that ur cousins/parents dont wanna see if they dont know if u have a girl friend...its dat simple....so stop banging about the nude part and concentrate more on the App part..if u can

if i clud create an App by myself then why the hell would i come to this site and ask for help????
try to understand dude

and am bumping this thread only since 1 week....not everyday....

stop being dirty and get to work .....

But on the whole -this idea is a long waited app for this device. So I voted for it.

I can't, there is one I like, but you won't like it as it is not nooby-GUI. Just check the file managers, they are not that big, I think you can do a little bit of the work as you are the one who wants to hide the porn from his girlfriend and not me
