The n900 is a great phone. It has top notch reception, and good sound quality. The only phone related features it is missing are fluff features like distinctive ring.

The user community is actually a reason why it will be around MUCH longer than manufacturer supported phones that are updated every few months. The user base has made the n900 better than it was six months ago, and it seems to only be getting better.

So.. sold my N900 and got Galaxy S (European version) and after a few days I have a bit mixed feelings about the phone.

I was pretty satisfied with my N900 except for a few nags, batterly life and how sometimes Phone application UI would lag so much I could not receive the call. Also was not great fan of that 'landscape mode only' thing going on.

+Screen on galaxy S is absolutely great.
+Browser is great. It's fast and I espcially like properly working text re-flowing i.e. when reading forums I zoom to a level where text is comfortable to read and douple tap on the text and it-reflows the text, no more panning left to right. change phone orientaion and it reflows the text to fit the screen again. Perceft!
+Image quality of the camera is OK
+Video recorder is much better.
+Nice form factor, I can hardy even notice it in my pocket
+ Setup is super easy if you use google contacs and calendar.
+ Finally I can have Spotify with offilne playlist

-Reception is poorer than in N900. It jumps between edge and 3g networks when I move around my house. N900 was always in 3g network (in same location and with the same operator).

- This phone suck power like a mother****er! Even with 1500 mAh battery I can barely do 24 hours. This might have something to do with poor reception as looks like biggest thingsucking the juice besides the display is cell standby.. Or android power management is just poor.

- No notification light unlike most Andoid devices.. yeah keep it simple Samsung, next time maybe remove buttons altogether? It would be really nice to know your phone is done charging, you've received a message or a call, without activating the device.

-Unlike most Android devices screen lock is opened by pressing the home button and then swiping the screen from any point to any direction. Result: Screen unlocks itself many times during a day in a pocket unless I use an unlock pattern which I'd rather not.

- Android OS seems to be US centric. For example the device is advertised having swype keyboard. But there is no support for my native language. Market only has free applications as google has not rolled out the market in my region yet (Finland). Upcoming andoid 2.2 update has new features like voice search, which I'm sure won't work in finnish eihter. Google maps has turn by turn navigation.. it's just 'not available in your region'.

- Pinch to zoom. So finally I have a phone which can be operated in portrait mode, with one hand, right. So could some one show how to do pinch zoom with just one hand if I wan't to e.g. check some web link sent to me while walking around. It would be nice to use that N900 style zoom with thumb. Again nice job Samsung, removig the + and - buttons from the browser.

-So the phone is blazing fast.. except when it decides randomly freeze for 10 seconds or so. Really nice when you are trying to open a phone app. Sometimes it's fast and next moment is just freezes for seconds.

- No hw button for camera.
- Ironically Google talk IM integration was much better in N900. You could see if you're online or not a a glance and same for your contacts. Now you have to open the app to see your status and who's online. Also in N900 you could set your location as the status. If I leave my google talk account online in galaxy it sucks my battery dead in less that 24 hours.
-This leads to next interesting point. If you're running out of battery and device turns off you wont get your alarm clock going of. Is this the same on all Android phones? Nokia phones turn them self off when there is still some juice left in the battery and you are still able to wake up with your alarm.
-Speaker is useless.. small holes on back of the device. Sound is really muffled when the device is on the table.

There should be android 2.2 update for this device shortly. Let's hope it fixes some of the issues. Anyway when is the next Meego handset with hw keyboard due?

Because iv been playin with it all day on wifi with max brightness, on msn, installing and uninstalling apps and the battery indicator has hardly moved. This is without my sim inserted

Galaxy S is generally thought to have great battery life. I have had it for a month and it lasts ~30hrs no matter what you do.

i wish the galaxy s had the n900 apps

i am missing skype, a dnla client that works, reliable internet radio, dosbox, mame and a decent task manager

it has a good browser though no flash yet but this should be fixed by october

it is also much easier to handle one handed and the battery is about as good as with N900... probably a bit better

it is a very good phone but needs a bit of polishing

i am more surprised with android's lack of basic apps. i thought by going to android i would have all those amazing apps etc

untrue, the N900 has by far the best community apps and its stock apps are much better too!

Ironically, more often I hear N900 people wishing the N900 had more Android-like apps. Huh. Who knew.
