Ouch! Disabling most of the things that most people find enjoyable?

Most people
being the operative word. I for one enjoy battery life over weather forcasts and cpu info and I don't have time to chat on IM all day but thats just me. I don't have widgets or IM running on my computer either.

C'mon now, there's a forum-wide search, with a option to show posts, not threads. And more advanced options should you need them. There's a per-thread search. And finally, there's Google search (try this in your Google search box: "site:talk.maemo.org paai reality sucks").

What more can you ask for?

Can someone explain to me the urge for portrait mode. SMS T9 is best in portrait mode, and basic phone dialer, but for everything else.

And the GPS rocks. Ovi maps is great, full search for anything, always up to date and is fast and easy to use.

You can use it with one hand. This is desirable for a number of reasons:
Doing something else with the other hand. (No, not THAT)
Not looking like a total idiot.
Being able to use the device while walking, without looking like a zombie.

Also, I've found it's kinda nicer being able to use one hand.

Like the review, just a couple of points -

1 - The charger, I just got a cheap-*** generic car-USB charger and all was fine when used with the cable that came with the N900. maybe this whole area is a bit hit and miss?

2- Ovi maps. Yes, it is horrible, yes the UI leaves a lot to be desired. Yes, downloading all the maps using nokia's map loader was a hassle. However, once you get used to it it has the benefit of just sitting there quietly, showing you where you are, not speaking and doing its job.

I grew to love it on a 27000km trip. Some of the folks that tried to use it at various points along the way didn't get on with it so well!

Yes, I choose to write "most" since there are modern ones that do work according to some users. I have had no luck but will keep trying.

As for maps, I realized i only tried it way before PR 1.2, so i gave it another shot. And it was actually pretty good now. I don't need turn by turn or recalculating route so that's fine by me. Will update OP.

What may work for a USB charger is to take a cable for a standard nokia phone, and use the adapter cable supplied with the N900. It depends a bit on the output power of the charger.
