I doubt very much that initial sales have been to 'average consumers'.
Sounds pretty average to me.
Kinda like Chrysler's PT Cruiser's...

Now, speaking of PT Cruisers, when I lived in San Francisco, I saw those everywhere when they first came out. Granted, San Francisco is a much smaller city, but they do tend to gravitate to the hip thing more so than other large American cities.
