So is there anything to really replace the high end N900 or a Symbian device? I don't see any alternative. Android-based phones are out of the question not only because of Android's technical weaknesses, but mainly because of Google.

What I hope for is either a non-Nokia MeeGo phone (there were rumours about such devices a few months ago...) or a future Symbian device that combines the strengths of the N8 with a hardware keyboard.
What about E7!?!?!

Well, no more classic Maemo.
MeeGo is an option, but it seems that manufacturers are throwing on custom UIs on MeeGo. Yuck.
Android is definitely not an option because of Bionic, and because it feels so featurephone.

Oh well, time to build my own phone.

And your point is?

There really is nothing you cannot do with an E6. If the E6 is not the answer, then there is something else you are are seeking. The only thing I can think of is xterm (and everything with it) which the N900 already have, and it's not like the terminal will evolve anytime soon.

I think I've already established the reasons Symbian is not good enough, but let me summarise:

- Cannot have more than one 'window' open in the same app (2 e-mails and a reply being a good example).
- The platform is no longer going to be developed, application developers will migrate away and the community cannot develop the code instead (because it's not Open Source).

And I'll add a more distant third - it's not very easy to port open source linux apps to Symbian. With the N900 it was fairly trivial as it was Linux and X. This is one of the reasons I'm attracted to WebOS - it's Linux, and it can run X.

I think it's time to make a phone ourself.

We will take a N9 hack it with a mini bluetooth keyboard and insert it on a little bit bigger casing so we will have a N950. Maybe we could use the N900 casing and keyboard and fit the N9 inside with keyboard hooked on the N900 keyboard

I did consider the E7. It wasn't available when I bought a new symbian, so I chose the C7. But looking back, the C7 was the right choice and I wouldn't get the E7 now in spite of its great keyboard and screen: It lacks the FM-transmitter and doesn't support SD-cards. No use having it.
