My guess, they wanted both a keyboard and keyboard-less version, both looking similar hence the basis on the "Nokia U" design by community design they both seem to have.

Then they decided to scrap the original keyboard design, but they have a few thousand, so they wanted to, apparently, do a DDP with those.

Though, it kind of seems unlikely they'd make that many prototype devices so early on, but it's the only thing that fits with having both devices, but an early drop for developers (with a keyboard).

first the software wasn't ready.
it's harder to equip an already existing device with new hardware (e.g. better CPU) than just finish developing the one already in the works.
another reason they told me is that the mechanic of the slider wasn't good enough for the consumer. would have caused a lot of complaints. i wasn't able to test this by myself, for example by breaking the device for obvious reasons...

ofcourse i do. but what i am implying is their strategy and roadmap of future disruption OS from the past. instead of growing the 2007 OS and making it compatible with the hardware to be followed by 770 they came out with whole new os and device coming back to square one and then N801(?) back to square one then N900 back to square one so is the new harmattan back to square one yes it is, because it not being fremantle. and no upgradable path for N900 reason being hardware limitations, but just not being a hardware there whole OS stack is change meaning no apps developed for N900 and previous IT not compatible.
so is there another phone if ever released goinng to be square one or????

yes, in the past nokia always made 1 os-version for 1 device... with symbian its the same. e.g. if you have a phone with s60v2, you cant update it to S60v3 aso.

but remember that elop wants to change this (one of the few decisions i like), if i remember correct, he was the one who has kicked out the plans for symbian 4 and said that all coming devices should be updateable with the latest version...

maybe in the future everything will be different/better

as far as we "heard" it, the dev device was the one whic hshould came las tyear, but they had problems with the ffcc (afaik) so they needed to correct 1-2 things... and because they already had produces some devices, they have decided to give the "dev" device to devs for creating some nice apps...
keyboard device was supposed to come out last year. the non kbd one this year. but due to software problems it kept getting delayed and now hardware is too old , Nokia cannot charge high price for it and they want only one model... so 2nd model become consumer model.

I think that you may be right about the consumer device not coming to the u.s.

Nokia is going to use Windows Phone to try to finally get into the u.s. market. They don't want to risk that strategy by putting out a Meego/Harmattan device in the u.s. which has no future. So I predict no consumer device for the u.s. Good I live in Europe
