Well, that doesn't explain the success of windows (where things usually work badly if at all, unless by "just works" you mean typing arcane incantations in the windows' registry editor).
what usually makes it cough are 3rd party hardware drivers - a tribute to its openness.
it doesn't as much explain the success of windows as rather the success of apple. in many of their commercials, they make fun of instability of windows machines.

However much you hate Microsoft and Windows, it's not realistic to portray them not 'working out ok out of the box'.
Whether they deteriorate much quicker than other OS, needs higher frequency of 'maintenances' or that they suck *** after a period of time does not detract from them 'working out ok out of the box'.

I think some people need to break out of the phone paradigm and see this thing as being something else. Most of us here at tmo don't think of it as a phone, but as a smaller internet tablet with some phone stuff in it. At least I think we do, if not, I'm willing to be corrected.

But as it is, a device by Nokia that holds a SIM card and will ring when somebody dials your cell phone number will be just a phone for 98.17% of the consumers. This is the new Nokia phone! And as a phone, it can do less than previous models. It can't do MMS, it can't do video calls, it can't sync with a web service, you cannot use your bluetooth keyboard with it...
There's a chance that consumers will be disappointed by all this. All I'm saying is that it's good reviewers tell them in advance so that people have the correct expectations. And I don't see the point of bashing reviewers who do just that.

Nobody thinks in the line of "oh it cannot do that, I don't want it then" except if its a so-called dealbreaker.
For most features its a long sum of + and - after which the consumer makes a decision. Thinking along the lines of 'it doesn't do X, it sucks' is oversimplifying.

It took them an awfully long time to have something somewhat working out of a carefully designed box.....and that stops working as soon as you turn it on

After that you'll see fmms.log in filemanager or when you connect the device to your desktop as a mass storage device.

there's nothing wrong about telling people so. why shouldn't eldar make that clear in a review? it's better not to have people buy the N900 when they expect something "better than S60".
