I never expected you to say that, sachin007! You've always been a big booster of the new phone form factor!

Hopefully you didn't sell your N8x0....

Now for the big test:

I want to hear from you in 3 weeks: do you still miss the big screen? If you still think so, then how many times have you gone back to your N8x0 in the last 3 weeks to use the big screen?

Hey Qole,

Yeah i miss the big screen. But everything else the n900 kicks ***. I already gave my n810 to my cousin so i cannot compare. But i rarely scroll horizontally on the n810.... on the n900 i use it a lost.... not ideal but okay.

Ill let you know after i use it for a week.

Oh no, Sachin was always in the Tablet with big screen camp - but ready to settle for the N900 and the phone bit.

So he has reasons to complain. But true - I found the N900 small too after using the N810 (which I still have).

But after the 3 days of N900 browsing - you dont feel the difference too much. In fact I only just used the N810 to listen to music - as the external speakers on the N180 is far better than the N900 sound. But screen size is not a big factor now.

But yes the keyboard does take some getting used to - but typepable.
The UI is damn good and responsive.

Haven't had any hangs or reboots as some complained.

Battery usage is one full day so far (lesser than my N810 - but N810 didn't have a phone in it).

The phone part so far is OK - does the work - no complains (in fact I had complains with my old N95).

Camera is pretty good - but not equal to my N95 in clarity.

Love the browser the best - contacts app with status on all protocols is very nice and handy.

I'm very pleased that everything seems to be working - haven't had any spontaneous boots in first 4 hours or so, browser is pretty good, mic working (I'm in UK, so thought I'd mention that, customary apologies to poor old nuknuk)

I'm not used to touchscreen phones whatsoever and am finding the control hard going with fingers, so tending to use stylus which I'm more familiar with.

One problem I am having is that non-browser apps that want to access the net have a tendency to resolve things as 1.0.0.0 - if you search the forums for that IP, you'll find various problems this can cause.. It's actually a problem I've seen before to do with a mismatch between some resolver libraries and the dns service offered on some types of wireless routers.

Trouble is, I'm a bit stuck to fix it, because I need root access on the device to install a temporary /etc/resolv.conf to point to a working dns and I need application manager to work in order to get root access (I'd rather do this without having to take the red pill).

I think I'll have to use the t-mobile data connection to download becomeroot, in order to fix it.

If it is possible to fix the 1.0.0.0 problem in the next firmware, I think it will be well worth the time - it's a confusing and timewasting problem.

Other than that, nothing really to add to the various good writeups here and in other threads (I'm talking about the mostly-positive ones ) - it works with some aplomb (modulo the 1.0.0.0 problem) the screen is amazing, I'm probably going to have to start wearing glasses at some point...
Yeah with you, I'm seriously thinking of going to my opticians showing him my n900 and saying I want glasses that are of higher magnification than normal reading glasses, if you want to blow peoples minds just show them bounce, (you have to download it first) via App manager.

I got my n900 yesterday and was surprised that it wasn't as chunky as I imagined it would be. The hardware felt nice and solid, no complaints there. They keyboard took some getting used to, but I love the way it feels in my hand, and the three rows really do make it easier to be interactive with the touch screen.

As far as the software goes, the multi-tasking is excellent. It seems fairly intuitive, but it does have a learning curve. There are several things that I dislike, and that I hope will soon be fixed

- Make the backspace key a universal back button. It will take you one space back from wherever you are, or take you back to the home screen. The backspace key is perfectly located for this, and would make it function just like the Motorola Droid.

- Make the shift key bring up the multi-task menu. As far as I know, the shift key doesn't do anything outside of a text entry field, so why not let the shift key also multi task when not on a text field? A long press could bring you to the home screen.

-Move the menu to the lower left corner. Seems like it would be easier to hit when the keyboard is open, which for me at least is most of the time.

-Improve the icon quality, and allow the option for the name of the app to be displayed along side the icon when placed on the desktop.

-Allow the icons to snap to a grid on the desktop

- UI could be more polished, I guess that it a person preference though. Also, some icons need to be rearranged, such as when you press on a contact to call it, why make the icons to select (such as cell, home, sms ect) all the way on the bottom of the screen, and leave the entire upper half blank? Makes them tough to get to in portrait for the cell.

-Portrait mode. Would be really really useful. Every other smartphone has it, why cant the n900?

-Improve phone. Yeah i know phone second, step 4 of 5 bla bla... the bottom line is that most people are going to be sorely dissapointed by the phone aspect.

- Allow the option for the arrow keys to navigate between links on the short press, and scroll on the long press.

-Reduce time to long press on the desktop when selecting icons.

-Could use a more polished notification system.

-The auto screen rotation is wayyy tooo slow. It makes the auto portrait for the phone app almost pointless.

- Let the arrow buttons control more applications other than the browser, such as the app manager.

So yeah, the phone isn't perfect, and hopefully these issues can be sorted out, because it has tons of potential. The way it is right now, I don't think I would keep it, but I'm holding out to see if any new firmware updates fix these things. Also, when the device sees more hands some progress may be made.

Mine arrived tonight. I played with it while charging it. I'm impressed so far. The biggest disappointment is the missing telepathy transports. I know I can get them from Extras-dev. I might just wait until they are official.

My N900 gave me a WTF moment. I turned it off while it was plugged into the charger. The charging light stopped blinking and the N900 made noises. It alternated between a single buzz and a bing each separated from the other by 10-20 seconds. It kept that up until I unplugged the charger. I turned it back on, then turned it off and plugged in the charger. It returned to the expected behavior: blinking indicator light and no noises.

----- Edit December 8, 2009 -----

I've had it about a week. It's growing on me. It's the nicest tablet I've ever had. (I have the 770 and the 800.) It's the nicest phone I've ever had. All in all, I'm very happy with it.

I've never had WIFI or 2-, 2.5-, 3-, or 3.5-G service on a phone before. I like it a lot. I used it the other day at a museum while on a date with a geek girl to find a restaurant. She used her iPhone's restaurant finder app. I just used Google and urbanspoon.

A few days ago, the media player surprised me by showing me the UPnP server on my network. I streamed music from it for over an hour while working at my desk.

Last night, I discovered that it can play some of the movies I downloaded from the Miro player's Archive Classic Movies feed. I streamed them off my UPnP server. Later, I used the file manager to copy them into the N900.

I've used the Map application a little bit. It's OK. It doesn't show me moving around with the same fidelity as MaemoMapper did on my N800 with an external GPS but I think I can make use of it.

I'm starting to make use of pixelpipe and I have a qik account but haven't done anything with it yet.

I even signed up for OVI even though I publicly complained that I don't get it. I'm giving it a try. When it fully works with Fremantle, it may be the easiest way for a non-Windows user to sync. Having said that, I'm holding out for a SyncML server I can run on my Mac or my Linux netbook.

Speaking about sync: it took me a long time to figure out how to transfer my Thunderbird address book into the N900. First, I made Thunderbird export to a CSV file. Then I made Evolution import the CSV and export a VCF file. Finally, I copied the VCF file to the N900 and imported it into Contacts.

It took a while to figure this out. Thunderbird exports LDIF, CSV, and TSV. Contacts doesn't like the first two and I didn't try the third. Evolution claims it imports LDIF but it didn't do a good job with the file that Thunderbird made for me. However, it did the right thing with the CSV file.
