latest update is that i can increase my data usage to gig but have to reduce my texts. this is a joke
If your current price plan has “YP” at the beginning of its code (see the first page of your bill) then you’re on the older version of the premium plans and are eligible to move to the new ones. You’ll pay the same as you currently are per month for the same allocation of minutes and texts, but with twice the data allowance. The handsets this applies to are: HTC Touch Pro 2, HTC Desire, Google Nexus One (which was previously 1GB), HTC HD2, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Samsung Galaxy S or Nokia N900.

I had this sh*t earlier today, they said they could move me to a tariff with a 1GB allowance for the same price, but that my "unlimited" texts would be reduced to 500, but I'd still get unlimited texts to vodafone numbers (wow!)

2.5G is a way of wringing a bit more performance from the old 2G network.
Of course, just cos your operator advertises their 3G network as 'upto 7.2Mb/s' doesn't mean you will get anywhere near the theoretical max in practice. Use www.speedtest.net over a few tests in different locations to see what speeds you can achieve in the real world - but you can trust the hone when it shows you the connection type, it is telling you the type of physical data connection it has established.
n900: "with power comes responsibility".
If you buy a niche, highly modifiable smartphone and proceed to mess it up by blindly screwing around, don't just blame the phone, also blame yourelf.
