the N900 will be incomplete even compared to an average S40-phone, and of course it lacks a whole lot of features I use regularly with my S60 phone.

also, i don't quite understand your being so upset. the phone part on the N900 is far behind. if you don't need these missing features in a phone, be happy. but don't try to deny that they are missing.

I do agree that a £500 mobile phone should have MMS however, dam I can go to my local supermarket and get a phone for peanuts that supports it... ironically it would probably be a Nokia phone

Kind of, yes.
For instance, I'm not involved in the marketing. But take the N800 and N810, they weren't heavily marketed, in relation to how Nokia usually markets their devices. I (as a purely personal opinion) would have seen heavy marketing for them as counter-productive. They weren't ready for mass markets, on many levels, the UX being one of them.
If some John Doe would have been targeted and found by a N800 ad, and he would have gone through the trouble of trying to see the device and perhaps even buy one, and get disappointed over what he bought, it wouldn't have been very good for either Maemo or Nokia in the long run.
I remember Nokia World: I was also surprised at the way the N900 was heavily downplayed.
Now I understand why, there are many elements not ready for mass consumption. I am glad Nokia has been open about those, in fact.

I'm also interested in what's far behind with the phone functionality on the N900. I think it's quite on par with what e.g. Android has to offer there. What are the missing parts?

Someone asked earlier where or to whom Eldar works for... at least few years ago he was the lead analyst for Mobile Research Group. To my understanding this is also the biggest "connection" for him and the reason why he indeed has these prototypes and apparently pretty amazing number of devices available.
I also can't really understand why some of you had to attack so harshly against him. Some even said that they haven't even heard of him before and frankly, that tells more about the commenter than it does about Eldar. In my books he's still probably the best reviewer when it comes to phones (thanks to his connections and very thorough articles). And there's a reason why he still gets these devices even though his previews and reviews may also harm the companies (or at least the big guys like OPK might think like that).
This is just a guess but I think that Nokia has given the device to Eldar "unofficially" because he is a known player and knows the limits. By limits I mean that he knows how to maintain both the position where he can make scoops and the trust that for an example Nokia (or at least certain parts of Nokia) shows towards him.
