mplayer seems to play everything thrown at it, provided you set some flags in config.
VLC works brilliantly on dedicated machines and that's where I'll use it.

Which flags are those?
I found that on some files, mkv, or some mp4 varieties, the image does play on mplayer, but in slow-motion.

Of course, but encoding is exactly what I am trying to avoid (it is never 'quick' for me)...even the Nokia 5800 can play everything, as long as you convert to nHD MP4.
You are probably right about the slow-motion. I was hoping I could switch to some usable frame-skipping, or set it to a slightly lower quality; not ideal, but better than what it does now.

only if VLC was availble, stable and not a hog I'd instal it now! sadly I do spend some time reszing large files to play on the N900 but not that much.....
i think its a great device for media, if you can be arsed tweaking and playing about!
