I agree with nosa101. the N8 is the mainstream device intended to compete with iPhone and popular Android devices. i think even in the States its already getting more recognition than previous nokia phones.
so yes the N8 is meant to stand up to the iPhone and Android devices like N1, Desire, Droid, Incredible, Evo 4G.
(IMHO they should have scrapped symbian and gone for meego.)

iPhone 4 is a nice looking and functional piece of kit and I especially like the addition of a gyroscope. Although give it 3-6 months and many other smartphones will blow it out of the water.

Also with Apple's walled garden developers are guaranteed a revenue stream especially due to the large user base. Nokia need to address this, since they are building such an open platform they need to entice developers.

Hoping the open source community does it all for them is not the way to go as it will breed contempt from the 'standard' users.

need some serious antitrust investigation of this ******** in the US

Is it possible to buy the new iPhone 4 from Apple at full price and not sign up for a data plan?
No, that's not possible. All iPhones purchased from AT&T or Apple in the U.S. must be activated with a data plan. But subscribers can pay full price for the phone and not be tied to a contract. They can simply pay for their service month to month. And they are free to cancel the service at any time if they have paid full price for the phone.

I'm not so sure about that. Mine isn't and it is plenty useful.

article was written before the launch of iphone 4, so largely speculative I think.
