You have clearly not been following this thread. That have been discussed in this thread on numerous occations. If you use the forum search you will find your answer.
The risk of overheating is very low. But do not get over comfortable and do something stupid like letting the phone run on 850mhz minimum. As always.. if you feel the phone get's hot - lower the mhz and you should be good.
I have tested a lot of different settings. I am running at 805mhz max which are enough for me. I benefit of the longer battery and a smother run. I do not need more juice as i am not a gamer
I will say this though and everyone needs to read and realise what i am about to tell you, i am an experianced engineer (i won;t go into detail as people know me now) whilst doing repairs i have indeed looked at the cpu area and can see very clearly the paint on the m/b has changed color and that is without overclocking on any of the 900's i have repaired.
Ok look at my 900 i will tell you a story... i got it beggining of February this year and i have run it 24/7 YES i mean that as it is connecting my pc to the internet via a mobile contract 24/7.
I did a preventative repair on my usb port (Texrat will confirm this as i told him) about 5 or 6 weeks ago and that was the last i seen of the inside of my 900 BUT when i looked at the m/b it had clearly been heating up around the cpu area and i can confilm no way i have overclocked ever.
You guys are indeed overclocking and some even over 1ghz, well in my experiance there is no way in hell a cpu of the design build we have in the N900 is going to last very long without proper protection against heat, not if my device is anything to go by lol.
So i guess i have no choice but to do my bit for the community and post a mod.
Incidently the board itself has got a lot of metal attatched to it and i think with a good mod it will in fact last many years.

This has got nothing to do with warranty at all as everyone knows they void that when overclocking (please don't use the sad excuse Nokia wont be able to tell).
Ok as this is obviously a serious situation about overclocking and looking at it seriously the N900 will obviously need to be overclocked to run Meego and the killer apps that max the cpu for longer than reccomended i am obviously going to have to look into this in a serious way and come up with a proper heatsink and ventilation system to keep everyone's device alive lol.
I will do this in the course of the next week or so and post the information with pics etc etc.

In short.. The cpu can take the heat but not necessary the phone. So the chance of frying the cpu is small. It's the voltage that are the villain here and could fry the battery. But if you are overcklocking you are probably also undervolting. So while getting more mhz you still not making a lot more heat. Thus it's pretty safe. Still caution needed.

Geneven dont try to be a clever dick here because your just not experianced to know what i am telling people, please go ask a few engineers ok and you will get the same answers i am giving you.
I have noticed your attitude towards people on here and can be somewhat flaming.
All i am doing is passing my experiance on to the community in general and i have NOTHING to prove ok as it is very very obvious what i am saying to be just simple plain fact if you have engineering experiance in any way or form with cpu technology.
No i am not griping but kind of putting you in your place lol..

ARM SoCs are not comparable to Intel radiators..err..chips.
the device has several watchdogs but we don't know how exactly they work
and what they control (they were not designed for overclocking) so we can't trust them.
the first problem you probably notice with excessive heat is data corruption which
most often leads to a reboot.
Heat accumulates over time so you only get heat problems if you continously
keep it at high load and frequency.
But OC @ 850 just to get a snappier UI (i.e. short periods of high frequency) should IMHO not harm it more than using 3.5G.
