Please somebody make me feel happy about the N900 not having Java per default. I don't want to have to easydeb it to be able to use Opera Mini :/

I don't believe there is a single telephone out there at anywhere near this price mark that doesn't have official java applet support. And if there is, shame on them.

Eldar delivered the goods before anyone else did, which he of couse could not have done if he were playing by Nokias rules while under a NDA. That he as a journalist protects his sources is a GOOD thing, not a questionable one. The review was extensive. He was quite positive, and this site was more or less praising him, and most certainly totally crying in joy about seeing all his screenshots.

And then, a little bit later, he says the device is more unstable than a N97. And all of a sudden he's antichrist, a liar and certainly doesn't know anything about the N9x0s or Maemo. And if you say "man may have a few points", you get broadsided by the entire active community, like you're an Eldar spy/troll.

You know where I expect this kind of behaviour? At a Sony forum. At an Apple forum. But not here.

This is not up to your usual standards, guys. The previewer has had access to a device, and the instabilities in it has bothered him. You guys make him look like Galileo Galilei.

This device is the first phone with Maemo. It _will_ have child diseases. If you believe anything else, you're wearing pink glasses. If it angers you that people finds some of these...

Then you should look into your inner self and ask yourself, what rational reason do i have to get angry about someone claiming their device is unstable?

There is no rational reason for anger and enmity. Regardless of brand, OS, or how the person got his device in the first place.
Look man - I personally had never heard of Eldar before his review - I hadn't read his prior review praising the n900. When he produced the second review and it popped up here, I asked two basic questions.

1) Where did the device come from. In doing so I hoped to understand if it was final hardware or a months old prototype.

2) What firmware was it running. In my opinion a review based on a firmware that is old is in no way valid as any number of things can change between releases.

Instead of providing those two items , which I feel were not exactly asking the moon. He proceeded to come onto the boards and simply dribble on about how he had access to all the cool new tech and how we were jealous of that etc etc etc. IMHO he brought any hostility upon himself.

I am looking for this so-called anger, but all I see is boasting, arguing and the occasional bursts of silly humor (guilty). Kindly point out anger, please. Thanks.

In the 20 pages of hostility I read through before I made this post, he had not yet come onto the boards. The next 26 pages, that I have read since, were not quite as hostile as before and it became a less ridiculous thread, really. A bit of kissing ***, of course, but more on point.

A great few of you guys keep churning over how he won't tell reveal his inside contacts. Well, come on! Do you really expect him to stop protecting his sources just because you ask the same thing over and over again? He said it once, then a dozen times more, at what point are you going to accept the fact that you will not get an answer however many times you ask?

A journalist, any journalist, that is protecting his sources, will keep protecting his sources nomatter how many times you ask him. This is not rocket science. This is simple journalistic rule of thumb, and if Eldar breaks this confidence, he will not be able to keep doing what he's doing for very long.

There is a difference between Java ME and Java SE. Android doesn't run Java. iPhoneOS doesn't either. Hm, and neither does S60. Wait... which phone runs full Java SE? For Opera Mini you need Java ME, and for that you need Java SE + MicroEmulator. Also, Opera Mini (and Skyfire) is heavily optimized for T9.

Careful, there, invoking the journalism defense. That sword cuts both ways, and I get the feeling you're not considering the flip side. Arrr, that way be irony...

You conveniently cut out an "if you feel anger" part, there, did you not?

Okay, then I can conveniently cut out parts when I quote too. Here is anger from this thread, pointed out:

This thread is not silly humor. It is Eldar Bashing.

I commented on this is another thread but ....

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/embedded.jsp

Should work on maemo since it is essentially a linux OS.
