Hi Fcrochik,

I have finally succeeded followingmthe instructions you have given on how to make the widget start automatically after reboot. I am not a developer I must admit so I had to start from the beginning learning everything about how to navigate in the Xterminal Linux world. I did not even know what "become root" meant. I took me quite a while!

The widget is for me clearly the best thing about Mycontacts. I am afraid it would put a lot of the other Non-developers out there off, if they also have troubble following the instruction.

It is now restarting. But not only the widget. The entire app! Thats more than I actually wanted...

Is there any chance you are going to include an option for automatic restart of the widget (and just the widget!) in a future update?

The widget is provided by the (whole) app. To see the widget you must start the app.
Otoh, one way to do this might be to hide the main window on startup if the widget is to be shown.

Very nice app. I go to be the 100th person to thank you for it!
Do I get a prize?

I was wondering if it would be possible to add in animated contacts? Use .gif or flash or movie files maybe?

I do enjoy things being animated.

Thanks again for the app!

After I said I was planning I remembered why I didn't: press and hold is captured by the "desktop" and will trigger "desktop settings". I don't have how to intercept it so I would have to create a "press and hold" for more than Xms and less than Yms and that would be very hard for any user. I think we will need to keep "thinking" about an alternative for the double click.

Two possible ideas:
  • split the on the the contact (e.g. left half show contact info, right half place call) - I don't like it!
  • after clicking on the contact show two buttons under (or above) the contact icon with the options - not trivial to implement but the best I could come up with so far...

Let me know your comments

Yes.... It is on the plans...

I decided to not "restart on boot" automatically for now because it takes a while.

Before I make it the default option I want to delay "reloading the contacts" so it does not impact the "phone startup time".

In theory I don't need to load the entire contacts database just to show the desktop but I have to work out several details before I can make it work this way.

It is probably on of the "most requested" features but I still haven't figure out a nice way to implement it. I am hoping that the developers of FastSMS, VertSMS or any other alternative-SMS applications would implement the feature and I would just change my contacts to send a DBus signal to them with the list of phone numbers.

Otherwise, I will have to create a "front-end" to allow users to enter the message when I think we have already too many good options out there.

I would suggest you (and everybody else interested on this feature) to contact your favorite SMS application's developer and suggest my approach. I will gladly work with any of them to make it happen.

It is an idea.... I will check but can't promise to act on it any time soon unless is really easy to implement.

@fcrochik
For me "double click" that is now implemented is better than the 2 replacement solutions you posted above. I will think about it and let you know if suddenly a better idea comes to my mind. ;-)
Thank you for the great job once again!

Sorry, I didn't read through all 46 pages so I might have missed the information. Is there any way to close MyContacts from outside the app? Is there a d-bus command one can use?

The reason is that theme customizer restarts desktop after changes but with MyContatcs running this completely breaks the desktop. Only solution left is to reboot the device. So I'm looking for a possibility to stop mycontacts before restarting desktop and to start it again when desktop is running. Do you have any clue on how to do this in a clean way?
