The mXT224 uses a unique charge-transfer acquisition engine to implement the QMatrixTM capacitive sensing method patented by AtmelŽ. This allows the measurement of up to 224 mutual capacitance nodes in under 1 ms. Coupled with a state-of-the-art XMEGATM CPU, the entire touchscreen sensing solution can measure, classify and track a single finger touch every 4 ms if required.
The acquisition engine uses an optimal measurement approach to ensure almost complete immunity from parasitic capacitance on the receiver inputs (Y lines). The engine includes sufficient dynamic range to cope with touchscreen mutual capacitances spanning 0.5 pF to 5 pF. This allows great flexibility for use with Atmel\u2019s proprietary ITO pattern designs. One and two layer ITO sensors are possible using glass or PET substrates.
The main AVRŽ XMEGA CPU has two powerful, yet low power, microsequencer coprocessors under its control. These combine to allow the signal acquisition, preprocessing, postprocessing and housekeeping to be partitioned in an efficient and flexible way. This gives ample scope for sensing algorithms, touch tracking or advanced shape-based filtering. An in-circuit reflash can be performed over the chip\u2019s hardware-driven two-wire interface (I2C-compatible).
The mXT224 represents a step improvement over competing technologies. It provides a near optimal mix of low power, small size and low part count with unrivalled true multitouch performance.

This is an ATOMIC BOMB (at least from my perspective).
http://androidandme.com/2010/09/phon...ndroid-tablet/
It seems that the Galaxy Tab employs the Amtel maxTouch touch sensors. These are the same touch sensors that are featured in the Galaxy S phones, the HTC Incredible, and the EVO. Apparently Samsung chose these sensors because of their superlative speed, accuracy, resolution blah, blah, blah.
That's not the exciting part. This is:
Apparently these sensors are well equipped for styluses input! Because of their extremely high sensor density (28 times compared to one of their closest competitors -- or so they say) and fast response, this allows the sensor's algorithm to EASILY discern, for example, the tip of a stylus for accurate stylus input.

The bottom line? It may be possible to have active-digitizer like pen-input functionality on the Tab! AWESOME!
The resistive fanbois should like this: apparently you can use the device with nails, or gloves on! Weird! Don't ask me how they're doing that with capacitive tech (and it is capacitive according to their site literature). The product information video (below) shows it tracking with gloves on -- a thin biking glove and a THICK mit! It must be a very sensitive capacitive sensor array!
Here's a promo video for maxTouch:

Here's a product introduction:

Bring it on! If I can do pen-input on the Tab, this is hands down the best consumer convergence device to date.

Interesting. All seems a bit too good to be true but lets wait and see.
There has not been any mention or showing of the rumoured blue tooth stylus pen for the tab so maybe it does not exist at all. Hopefully it does though but maybe just not coming out at the same time as the keyboard and other accessories we have seen officially revealed.

Interestingly, so this would have the same accuracy as a resistive touch screen? Wow, even more reason to get a Tab then.
