Agree. An "N97 killer" maybe, an iPhone killer probably not, but an iPhone competitor, yeah... Meanwhile, those of us that preferred the N8x0 over the iPhone for the things that are the Tablets strengths will no doubt thank Nokia for the great ride thus far, and follow Mer to other Tablet hardware.

I'd also like to hear if there's going to be a netbook. But, yes, I'd be happy without any more detail than: yes/no on the phone, yes/no on the N8x0 size tablet, yes/no on a netbook or netbook sized tablet.

"It's all aout me," that's my motto.

So I would like to point out that my prediction:

"i predict that a tablet per se will never be released" in a thread partly about when these things will be released, has not yet been proven false.

After all, what did all these talented guys do before internet tablets?
Actually, this is probably the reason for keeping the 800x480 resolution, even though it makes little sense on a little screen. Imagine what the interest in Maemo 5 alpha/beta would be if they announced at the summit that it targets 640x400 resolution.

A phone is interesting, and a netbook is interesting, but a tablet is what this community was built around, not "maemo".

Well, for the first time in my life I'm going to put up a "me too" post, because the thanks button isn't forceful enough for how I feel on this issue.

So... "me too."

Joe

...and yes, I realize it will make no difference whatsoever. Just a primal scream-type thing, perhaps?

I have to agree. When I bought my n810 the thing that clinched it rather then buying an ipod touch was the larger screen, hardware keyboard and the ability to run more flexible software then the really simple iphone applications. Now that I have had a n810 for some time the big, beautiful screen is the killer feature that enables all the other things I like about it like pidgin, ebooks and web browsing. But even this great screen can have some very small UI elements, especially on web pages. Shrink the screen without changing the resolution and I fear web browsing will become a chore.

I use my n810 as a scaled down netbook with sensational battery life rather then the beefed up smartphone, using applications like pidgin, ssh, vnc. I was hoping for an n810 with faster hardware and a 5 row keyboard as potential icing but the leaked specs seem more like super n97. I'm the first to admit my use case isn't very mass market but these leaked specs don't seem to really support it.

There is another size issue that concerns me. In my experience pocketability has more to do with depth then height or width. I routinly carry my n810 in my pocket without issue but a thicker device would be more of a bother.

Finally I hope a version with no gsm radio is produced. I think apple's real stroke of brilliance with iphone was to re-use the design for a web-enabled pmp to produce a much more affordable device. I know a lot of people who carry a cheap cell phone but bought an ipod touch for media playback, applications, mobile web and let's face it, iphone sex appeal without the monthly fees or contract. Unlocked gsm devices are expensive, especially ones with high resolution.

Dude... that is extremely profound, and sums up so much noise here into a nice, clean killer statement.

EDIT: and it leads to-- the tablet was something that more people used to approximate a laptop/PC rather than a phone (thanks ekul).

This remembers me. They're already trying to compete with the iPhone: they have already removed copy-paste (because both the tap-and-drag to select text feature and the d-pad are gone) .

Just joking (or so I hope).

I wonder what nokia and the maemo team is thinking of this backlash?

Combined with this huge thread and the 2 polls the community is clear that we need an internet tablet.

So lets see how commited maemo is to the community.

You may not want the answer to that.
