Ah - that explains it then. The OS X built-in VNC server is broken - Vine server is an alternative that I've heard recommended.

For ping? Unfortunately you need to be root to do this, so you'll have to first install rootsh from App Manager. You can then run:
Code:sudo gainroot ping server.name
