Mask everything with kapton tape remove the RF cover and hot air reball the chip to the board.
I dont recall the board layout, the instructions might even be in the big maintenance manual. The PDF was on the forum years ago.

It was my understanding that those are not capacitors but small battery cells.
Here is a thread dedicated to them: https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=90864

Hi there,

As you were able to see I was absent for like 1 month. I am really sorry for that, just my work gave me a hard time. Repaired only 12 boards and that was done in the September

During searching for something at home, I found whole N900 shell with screen and keyboard, I will donor them when I will finish rest of the boards.

I think there is time for some update.

Still because all the covid situation my job tries to kill me from the exhaustion and it almost end with success

But this time I have only few boards to finish, I hope I will be able to send that darn boards back before fully functional, working Leste will be available for N900. My friend told me he will be able to obtain some memory chips compatible for that Ti CPUs which are mounted as sandwich. Soldering those at home even with stencil is a nightmare but still - I will want to make an experiment on at least one board.

So you will make an experiment. Nice. But you know what it means if it is a success, right? You'll have to do it to all of them!!!

If you have an extra N9 you could try that cpu on N900 too. It would need a custom flashing though, but it should be possible. You have boards to experiment.

Well supposedly t-mobile was doing the same according to rumors, but t-mobile finally added some info saying they were not. Then added that some phone may not work because of old software and the usability to upgrade. Though they didn't specify what SW needed updating.

But in the end of the day it's Feb and my n900 still works!!! Thank the lords, since the my PinePhone is not yet ready for my daily use.

So maybe it will be similar in your case, but you still have 2 years of n900 fun.

x
