Lets not kid ourself. The world did not want MeeGo/Harmattan whatever and Nokia was already way too late to the game.
They had a story, a product, that production capacity and even in those dire hours of Nokia N9 launch they had the press on their hand, despite the orphaned status of the device during the handson tests.
Just failed to market it while flirting with intel and MS.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/22/nokia-n9-review/

And let's not kid ourselves, the world was already tired of iOS and Android in 2011, only thing is, only now, 3 years later, companies like Blackberry are touching the area opened by the N9.

Let's see how many journalists will rave about today's "Nokia tablet".

After the NIT came the NOT.

Disappointed that it is a tablet and running Android.

If only at some point it could be recycled into a Sailfish tablet...

Gfx/CPU for this will be decidedly second gen by the time this device gets released. Screen should be gorgeous. Like that they are using reversible USB.

What chance of success does this have against the plethora of other Android tablets? Nokia None?

At least they didn't call it Nope.

Btw, what does "eMMC 5.0" mean? It has Intel Atom cpu - I bet they'll protect the bootloader somehow, but when it gets cracked... Maybe it will be possible to install any Linux on it (not only Sailfish)

Another note - am I blind or is it pure-WiFi tablet? No GSM/3G/LTE/whatever modem at all...?

edit: and almost 8 inches screen... if it will be possible to install Linux on it, and a nice case with builtin keyboard will be available, maybe I will replace my old netbook.

I would guess it has something to do with the brand licensing agreement with Microsoft. The agreement talks about 'no handsets until 2016' - today, there's a little difference between GSM capable tablet and a big phone, therefore they probably had to make sure it's not a 'handset' or anything close.
