Well I'm sitting in a hotel room in Watertown, NY. I've been using Maemo mapper for a few days. My process is to fire off Map to start the GPS, then fire off Maemo Mapper.
First lock on up here took over 5 minutes, driving slowly in the car.

Subsequent only took a minute or less. I get in the car, fire it off, put it on the dash and drive.

Hotel room window faces almost directly east. I t won't obtain a lock in 15 minutes. My Garmin C320, same window says poor satellite reception, doesn't obtain a lock either.

Now how am I going to find the way to the bathroom without my GPS??

There are apparently some known bugs in the software stack that will be fixed in the final release of OS2008: http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail//ma...er/008073.html

I still think it is funny to release a hardware product with a beta OS, but I don't really care as long as it is fixed.

Question: In which file is the map of Canada?

Purpose: I would like to delete the USA maps -- but leave the map of Canada. I have 1.5G of maps of USA East and West. But I am reluctant to remove these as I use the map of Canada. Not finding it, I think that it may be contained in the USA files.

Reason: I would like to remove the USA maps to make room for the UK. ( I am more frequently wandering near Bibery -- than LA).

Thanks,

SW

Canada is in the folder as "Canada - Alaska". If you don't see it, then it is probably the currently open (or last opened) map file. Navigator seems to rename the map files to make them the "current" one. If you want to confirm, go into Navigator and select a different map, then look in the folder again.

p.s. It takes soooo long to download the USA maps that you might want to back them up to your computer or something before deleting them, so that you can restore them more easily in future.

catfish: The (too) short answer is that GPS receivers first have to both find the satellites and figure out where you are, actually it's doing both at the same time (iterating). When you move around during this phase it's much more difficult. So, stand still until you've got lock, then start moving.

(Some newer, better chipsets don't have this problem anymore. But the N810 one does, and most chipsets of the previous generation as well.)

the system works best when you first fire up agps while you have a connection to the internet - it downloads the satellite info in the background
then CLOSE AGPS
then open map or maemomapper - you will get a w/i a minute
