The root cause is a configuration issue on your NIT, the WAP, or both. Most people have no problems connecting, as long as the settings are correct.

Had a really strange experience with the BT Openzone wifi at the Basingstoke Hilton. Essentially saw the Openzone access point but refused steadfastly to connect, citing that it could not get an IP address from the AP.

After a good hour fruitlessly trying to connect, I gave up and went to bed. Woke up at 6am and tested it before heading to work and it worked instantly without complaint! I don't think there were any BT guys on site overnight to fix the problem. Weird!

Yes, but overnight it's possible that the DHCP leases for a few laptops have expired and now there is one for your NIT. The fact that your NIT said could not get an IP as opposed to could not authenticate means that you were connected to the AP.

I was thinking that but I kind of thought that there would be enough IP address capacity in a small scale hotel in the commuter belt!!!

I've found that on some wi-fi spots that require authentication (username and password) or require that you accept their "terms of use", javascript needs to be enabled on the device to allow this interaction. Javascript was not enabled by default on my 770. Once I enabled it, I was able to connect to internet. You are able to see the networks without J-script enabled but you don't get IP address, so of course you can't browse the internet.

How do I enable javascript on the N800?

I am also having problems accessing hotspots in the mall. I just got my tablet two days ago.

having just passed through London Heathrow airport, Minneapolis and Phoenix, I have some experience here.

PHX has free wifi, I was able to connect through it and ring my wife (in england) using the n800's voip client via the Sipgate service - much cheaper than mobile phone roaming!

MSP has boingo, which costs money. I did try the NorthWestAirline's executive lounge's wifi (from outside) but neither the tablet nor my (linux) laptop worked - the laptop would only associate for a short while and drop. No idea why. There were other wifi services around the airport, some ad-hoc, none gave me useful service - some didn't give me a useful IP address and avahi kicked in and picked a random one.


LHR has BT Openzone, I have some connection credit via my employer, it worked pretty well.

I was also able to make use of the free wifi at Starbucks in Arizona - picked up a free card at the cashier, paid $5 to load the card, used that to buy coffee, registered the card in the outlet using my n800, signed up to the free wifi there and then, signed in and it worked straight away!
